saluts to all from a newcomer
i want to convert a 1:1 to 16:9, but i have some doubts and im not sure if im doin this thing right
ok so i have this 640x480 1:1 and in order to convert it in 16:9 and keep dvd compliant i have to Crop 60 lines off top, 60 lines off bottom (can this be 40 and 80?), resize the remaining 640x360 to 720x480 (720 is that right?)
or i can Resize to 540x480, add 90 pixel wide borders left and right to bring the file back up to 720 pixels wide (this way ill see black bars by the sides when playin on dvd right?)
can someone tell me if im doin something wrong here?
thanks

Hi, tengo6dedos. And welcome to forum!
ok so i have this 640x480 1:1 and in order to convert it in 16:9 and keep dvd compliant i have to Crop 60 lines off top, 60 lines off bottom (can this be 40 and 80?), resize the remaining 640x360 to 720x480 (720 is that right?)
Is there any particular reason for having 16:9 DVD? I am asking because DVD supports 4:3 as well, and with 640x480 it is easier to go DVD with 4:3-flagged stream.
But if you need 16:9, that's how I would do that with 640x480 source:
1) Add black borders of 106 pixels to each side, left & right. (This way you will not loose part of the picture by cropping top & bottom.)
2) Resize to 704x480.
3) Add black borders of 8 pixels to each side, left & right*. So, the final resolution is now 720x480.
4) Serve the video to MPEG 2 encoder and tell it to output 16:9-flagged stream.
*The reason I am resizing to 704x480 and then adding black borders from left&right to get 720x480 is because many standalone DVD players & TV sets tend to slightly overscan a picture from DVD.

@tengo6dedos
If I understand you correctly, it sounds like you don't mind loosing video from cropping the top & bottom. Therefore, the first method you stated, cropping 60 lines (or 40 and 80, as it doesn't matter) and then resizing to 720x480, then flagging the stream for 16:9 on a DVD will do the trick.

No, standalones usually overscan just about 8 pixels from each side. So, you will see this black bars on the left & right side of the picture. The reason for adding black bars on left & right is to avoid cropping top & bottom (and, hence, loosing part of the picture).
But, if cropping top & bottom is OK for you, then just follow Southstorm's suggestion.
