View Full Version : Scenarist Browsable Slideshow Problem

There are 2 types of slideshow in Scenarist HDMV, browsable and timebased.
Has anyone tried to make a browsable slideshow in Scenarist HDMV?
The idea is that the image holds until user input, but I don't think this feature works. The images just cycle through like a timebased slideshow.
Any ideas?

once you have a browsable slideshow playlist, you need to go to the play item properties and change it from no still to still for infinite duration.

I have done this but they still cycle through in 1sec intervals. I encoded the pics in the still image encoder as "Browsable Slideshow 1ES". When I add them to the playlist each image shows up with a seperate PlayList Mark, but they cycle through quickly.
I think each image has to be a seperate Playitem, but this seems impossible to add 100's of pictures manually as Playitems. If this is the only way to do it, there would be no reason for "1ES" vs "Multiple ES" image encoding.

I tried the same thing with Multiple ES and it does the same thing in the respect that the single image just plays for one second. I haven't figured out how to use a still background for a main menu since as far as I know this is how it is supposed to be done.

You should double check your PlayItem properties.
The exact process is as follows:
bring as many images up to 999 into still image encoder
encode as browsable single ES. (the duration doesnt matter unless you plan on have animated PGs to go with the slideshow)
Bring the ves into scenarist
right click on the ves and choose generate playlist
go to the stream editor and expand the playlist, there will be a playitem inside
go to the play item properties and change it from no still to still for infinite duration.
when muxed the playlist will stay on the image until you choose next chapter or previous chapter.
ive done this many times and it works.

This is not the case. I tried it again and again and the same result as before with your exact steps. I even tried encoding the single ES in a different codec (I was using AVC but tried MPEG-2 with the same result). Images just cycle through (chapters change) in 1 sec intervals.
I even tried a different player (powerDVD) after muxing, but it gives the same result as the BD simulator included with HDMV.
My steps again:
drag .BMPs into encoder
set Encoder settings:
EncodeMovieType = Browsable Slideshow(1 ES)
BitRate = 15000000 CBR Interlace
Codec = AVC encoder
FrameRate = 29.97
AspectRatio= 16:9
drag .ves into "data"
select .ves, right click, generate playlist
highlight PlayItem under Playlist
change "Still Mode" from 'not still' to 'still for infinite duration'
create new "HDMV Title"
drag playlist to MO under title
mux (and play with PowerDVD) or test with simulator in program
watch as the chapters change every 1 sec as the images cycle through:confused::confused:
Thany you for trying though, there must be an elusive setting you are using.

Indeed I can also confirm that doing that just has the items cycle through using a standalone player (PS3).

FrameRate = 29.97
I haven't tried this method yet but I thought Blu Ray didn't support a framerate of 29.97.

I have tried with the settings as 24P in the image encoder and it still fails to work properly

lets not forget the possibility of players not playing according to the spec. I use arcsoft media theatre which does a very good job. Try you steps again with that player and see what your results are.
additionally 29.97 is BD supported as long as its interlaced.
finally on the ps3 front, make sure you have the most recent firmware. Also are you burning on DVDs or BD-Rs in your ps3 tests.

My PS3 is up to date and it is on BD-Rs/BD-REs. I can also confirm that there are a lot of other people reporting the same problem using all sorts of different players. In fact, I haven't seen one person other than you reporting it actually works properly on any player, hardware or software. :-/

for what its worth thus far all my browsable slideshows have come from tiff files and are encoded to mpeg2 23.976 progressive streams. My duration has been anywhere from 1 frame to 90 seconds per image.
Regardless of the duration the player simply stays on the image until a user interacts.
I also typically have an IG for my slideshows.
If you have already please try the arcsoft player and post your results.

Tried these exact settings and (as expected)....no worky!

If you truly want a browsable slideshow where the the images only advance when the user wants them to, try this.
- Use the Still Image Encoder to create a Multi ES Browsable Slideshow. (Warning, this will create the MUI files for each image so the directory will get cluttered)
- Import each image into Scenarist
- Create a Clip for each image
- Create a single PlayList and place each Clip within a PlayItem in that PlayList
- Set each PlayItem to Still for Infinite Duration
It can be time consuming to do, but the output I believe is what you are looking for.

I have done exactly this and it does work with a limited number of images. However, I tried 998 images (took me about 3 hrs to import) but the program crashes when the Stream is added (dragged) into the project. My point is, if this IS the way to accomplish browsable slideshows, what is the point of 1ES encoding?

For something that large, I'd create a 1ES Browsable Slideshow and create one Clip. Follow the same setup for the PlayList and PlayItems as above, but place the one complete slideshow Clip in each PlayItem. You'll then have to edit the In/Out times for each PlayItem to correspond with the In/Out of each image. Again, it's not very efficient but it'll work.

If I encoded 998 images in 1ES, and added that ES to 998 PlayItems in one PlayList, that would be 996004 PlayListMarks. I don't think the program will allow this. Maybe I am misinterpretting your post. Thanks

You'd only have 998 PlayKistMarks, one at the beginning of each PlayItem. The max is 999 per PlayList. The maximum PlayItems per PlayList is also 999. You're close on both.

I tried it with 5 images encoded to Browsable Slideshow 1ES. Created a Clip from the imported .VES. Added the Clip to the PlayList 5 times to create 5 PlayItems. The result was 25 PlayListMarks. In addition, the IN/OUT markers cannot be changed as they are greyed out.

That's very odd. If I highlight the PlayItem in the PlayList, I can edit the In/Out. By doing so, it'll also get rid of the extra PlayListMarks. What version of Scenarist are you using? For the record, I've done this with both Scenarist 4.3 and 4.5.
The question came up before about the difference between a Timebased Slideshow and a 1 ES Browsable Slideshow. A Timebased Slideshow can have multiple PlayListMarks within a PlayItem, whereas a 1 ES Browsable Slideshow can not. Scenarist versions prior to 4.5 will let you do this. It may be because of a spec update that took place recently and therefor is not in the older versions.
