I've read about a firmware update supporting divx but I haven't found a definitive answer as to whether these subs are (or will be) supported.

Ever? Is this official Sony policy?

And what about an xvid avi with two mp3 audio streams in it? Can you switch languages? Cause some standalones don't.

Sony has no business in adding subtitles. I suppose due to anty-piracy policy. Avi+subtitles = torrent :) If you have original discs you basically don't transcode to another format. Simple!

Actually I do! Since my media center's hdds were overflowded despite using DVD Shrink'ed ISOs, I've recently switched to xvid/idx+sub. My original DVDs are the backup, the avis are on the server for convenience.

Can you suggest a PS3 forum where these kinda qeuestions are more ontopic? Another thing I'd like to know is if the PS3 does playback avis from DVD+RW DL.

If you update to firmware 2.20, ps3 can now play xsub and idx+sub graphic based subtitles, there's still no support for external subtitles. If you have srt files, you can use programs such as aviaddxsub or sub2divx to remux the subtitles into the avi file to create a new divx file. From my experience, aviaddxsub seems to be more flexible, support foreign language fonts, has custom resolution (I have couple 720p divx videos), etc, but lack of a nice preview window like sub2divx, but it does the job well and pretty intuitive to use. After you remux the subs, have your file either stream or copy to the ps3, play the video, press the triangle key, you get the subs.

Don't know about xsub but idx+sub are external subs. As are srt which still don't play as you say which sounds strange to me but which figures considering it's Sony we're talking about.

Well vobsubs and xsubs are both bitmap based. So I guess text based subs don't work, rather than internal vs. external.

Actually got a PS3 sitting on the floor here. Haven't even opened the box though.

Sup guys, did anyone manage to get srt subs to work in mp4? From what I understand it's possible (I even found a guide that uses Yamb to just mux srt with h264 and aac and according to screen shots of the PS3 it works). But whenever I try to do it no subtitles show up, and the Subtitle button (when you press triangle to get options) says the option is not available.

I used SubtitleWorkshop 4 beta 2 to convert different type of subs (.sub and .ass mostly) to srt, without errors and it plays on my PC (though as white text on black background for some reason), but not on PS3. Is there another way?

Muxing with Yamb you would get ttext subs not srt's. Still once again text based (timed text) and from what I can gather also unsupported.

I hate it when stuff gets done half halfheartedly. Sony needs to just do it, not like we are asking for a fully software ps2 emulator here.

you can PS3 show one subtitle only with divx,I test it is working.
