View Full Version : DGPulldown Film --> PAL Options

When attempting to make Film video suitable for PAL DVD, using a 2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3 pulldown, what should the options in DGPulldown be set to please? Just trying to make sure I do it right.

I'm assuming Custom 23.976 --> 25, no Top field first, Yes to Set timecodes/Set drop frames, and No to set start time (does this help, or is it a cutter?).

And, does this only work on .m2v, or can it work on a muxed MPG? If not the latter, would it be easy to add such input?

:thanks:

I'm assuming Custom 23.976 --> 25 See above. 23.976->25 does not have a short repeating pattern as does 24->25. To achieve the desired pulldown, you simply specify the input and output frame rates.

no Top field first, Yes to Set timecodes/Set drop frames, and No to set start time (does this help, or is it a cutter?). Field order may be freely chosen as long as it matches your intended purpose. The rest depends on what you are trying to do. Often they are irrelevant. If you don't know whether you need them, leave them alone.

And, does this only work on .m2v, or can it work on a muxed MPG? Is it so hard to read the documentation? It works on elementary streams only.

If not the latter, would it be easy to add such input? No, because all the PTS/DTS stamps would need to be reworked. Apply the pulldown to the M2V that comes out of your encoder before muxing to MPG. Or demux if you want to apply it to an existing muxed stream.

OK... so if I have 23.976fps film video, and I want to go to PAL 25fps, DGPulldown is not the answer? I would need to resort to a speedup?

of course you can do 23.976 to 25.000.
neuron2 just pointed out, that the
2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3 - Pattern will break every now and then, when the 1000/1001 compensation is done.

Sorry, I don't entirely understand. Let's forget the 2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3 for a second :p I just want to go from film to pal. Will this, then, not be the best way to do that? You said it would break every now and then (and I understand that part). Do you think there will be any difference visually in DVD source? What should I look for?

going from 23.976 (or 24) fps to 25 fps via soft telecine using DGPulldown, or via hard telecine via 'interlacing' the Film will introduce two slight stutters per second cause of the tripled frame twice a second.

The option that is choosen by major labels is to speed up the movie fron 24fps to 25fps. This will completely avoid any stutter, but introduces a audio pitch by a half tone and a duration shorter by 5%.

It is up to you, which method you'll choose.

OK, thanks to you both, I get it now :)

One last question, slightly off-topic: Are there any PAL DVD players that auto-correct this speedup? Seems to me like it'd be very simple to do.

Sorry, I don't entirely understand. Let's forget the 2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3 for a second :p I just want to go from film to pal. The transformation depends on whether by "film" you mean 24fps or 23.976fps. But both are supported by DGPulldown.

Will this, then, not be the best way to do that? There are pros and cons to any method you care to mention. What you can't ask here is which is best (forum rule 12).

You said it would break every now and then (and I understand that part). I don't think you do. :)

He means that for 23.976 -> 25, the pulldown pattern is close to a repeating 2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:2:3, but every so often that repeating pattern gets broken (=changed) by the insertion of an extra field. It doesn't mean the video will look "broken".

Do you think there will be any difference visually in DVD source? What should I look for? Your question is not clear. You consider the pros and cons of the competing methods and choose your poison.

To be precise (I know you know it, scharfi), it's a tripled field, i.e., a single field repetition at a time. Field reps are less visually disturbing than frame reps, so it's important to be clear here.

True. Sorry, stupid mistakes.
