encoding from avi to mp4

Not sure I'm in the right thread here. But I'm trying to encode avi files into mp4 format to use on a mobile phone, and wondered which piece of software would do a good job?

3GP Converter (http://www.nurs.or.jp/~calcium/3gpp/). Website is in Japanese but it's easy enough to find the download link. Program default language is also Japanese but it runs a setup program the first time it runs so you can choose language and appropriate encoding profile for your device.
