Howto check XVID Video for B-Frames

Hi,

I have a hardware player using Sigma 8621 Chipset which doesn't really like the use of B-Frames in a xvid encoded video.

So plain and simple question: are there any tools that can show me whether or not a xvid file uses b-frames?

Does your player not like the use of b-frames or of packed-bitstream? Try to unpack with MpegModifier before re-encoding the whole stuff.

I made a couple of tests since yesterday and it turns out that the player ( it's a TViX 4000 ) plays xvid with b-frames (even with 2) fine IF I use the 'packed bitstream' option.

I have to admit I never gave the 'packed bitstream' thing any thoughts in my previous encodes. My old Philips player with MTK chipset played all my xvids just fine. I encoded with xvid_encraw and MeGui which disables packed bitstream in its common profiles.

Is mpegmodifier or any other tool able to change existing xvids into packed bitstream ones? Or is it only possible to unpack them afterwards?

Yes Mpeg4Modifier can pack and unpack bitstream in both directions withour re-encoding the video. It's not too difficult to figure out yourself how this can be done.

I can confirm that using packed bitstream fixed all my problems with xvid b-frames on my TviX 4000.

Same here! :) Now all the Xvids play just fine.

But I'm still having troubles with large (>2GB) OpenDML avis. I tried every option in AviMUX Gui and also used latest Virtual Dub, but no use. Using FF, FR or Goto function in these avis causes TViX to slow down, get audio out of sync or even hang up.

It seems that divxmux is the only tool that creates avi's TViX likes. Using FF (16x , 32x speed) works fine and without any delay with these avis. However divxmux isn't very stable, hangs up often and refuses to mux files >4GB.

I'm just wondering where the differences may be, that AVIMux/Vdub files play poor and the divxmux files play fine. I see no differences when loading up the files in GSpot. :(

I think this problem is also player-related. I never have files > 2GB, otherwise I split theme in pieces. Did You play around with the burning-options related to this?

Well I have lots of >2GB files that play just fine. HDTV Xvids for example. Ofcourse I could split my files, but why should I when there are files that play fine?

All my efforts to create working OpenDML files failed. However VirtualDubmod manages to create Avi 1.0 files >2GB that work absolutely fine with the Tvix Box. Avimux refuses to create Avi 1.0 files that large. (I gave up already on Avimux because those files played worst by far.) Saving the same file in VdubMod as openDML avi results in playback problems.

Well I always thought Avi 1.0 files only can be at least 2048MB large? Can someone pls explain this?

Still I can't pinpoint why some files play fine and others not. :(

I do also have problems with >2GB avi files in my TviX 4000. I have reported this issue to dvico and their response was to try mp4 format instead. However the only way I could make mp4 work with audio was by reencoding audio to aac format, but then the player got other playback problems (getting out of sync or loosing audio).

So my only working solution is to split the avi files to <2 GB.

However when writing that thread I was not aware that packed bitstream actually worked better. Now I encode xvid by using the Alt2nd-pass xbmc low hd profile to remove VBV problems. This really work great to make everything playable.

TviX 4000 is a hard disk media player so there are no burning options, the files are stored on a hard disk drive via USB or LAN.

Just quick idea. I use XBMC and run into issues with xvid files over 2 gigs.

A solution that may help - I use VDUBMOD 1.8.xxx (works for any version - I have tested all the way down to 1.5.10.xx) to open the video file. Select video and then select direct stream copy. Then I save the file as avi (different name however).

All issues gone. I do admit that this maybe an anomaly and the vdubmod maybe a waste of time (about a minute that is). However, it does seem to work.

Can you try and see if this solves your issue? That way I'll know that I'm not the only one using this solution.
