View Full Version : DV AVI to DV MOV - without re-encoding?

I need some tool that can convert DV AVI to QuickTime MOV file without re-encoding original AVI file so I can edit in Final Cut Pro on Mac. I need something that can just change "container" from AVI to MOV and leave video and audio intact.

Recapturing on Mac is impossible because I don't have original tapes any more :( and I don't want to edit AVI because it is not "native" FCP format and I heard it can be problematic with AVIs...

QTCoffee to the rescue:

muxmovie -self-contained -no-compressed-header input.avi -o output.mov

And the best part: it's free.

The full version of QuickTime Pro can do what you want too ;)

Did you find a solution that works for you? If not, I have an experimental Windows quicktime multiplexer that I have been working on that might work.

Can't FCP handle raw DV files (.dv, .dif, .dvsd etc)?

If so, you can convert DV AVIs (Type 1 and 2) to raw DV with our software (see signature).

$129.00 is a bit pricy, if all arminio requires for Final Cut Pro is a raw ".DV" stream :eek:

YAMB (with MP4box) can do this for free!

Final Cut can import raw dv streams, but it's much happier with .mov files. Besides, QTCoffee is a native Mac application; what's the point of offering a $129.00 (!) solution that works only on the PC?

Not sure why the touchy response.

It's free for personal/non-profit use (clearly indicated in my signature). The OP has AVI files. It isn't specified whether the AVI-to-MOV will take place on a PC or Mac.

It was just a suggestion to help solve the problem. Your kind of response makes me question why I bother to provide it for free.
