Problem after IE 7 Upgrade.....need Help

This morning when I turned on my new home build computer I was encouraged (by Windows) to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7. I had been working with IE 6 just fine but thought what the heck, this is a "new build" so I may as well keep it up to date with the latest.

After the IE 7 upgrade, I turned around and tried to get on the internet via IE 7 and it just set there saying "connecting"....I couldn't even use the mouse/cursor. ...it was locked up, I had to do a ctrl, alt, delete to get out of and back to the desktop. I went thru this process at least 6 times with the same results....nothing.....could not get on the internet.

I tried to do a system restore four times, but since the computer was a totally new home build (finished it Feb. 24) it had only 4 restore points....none of which worked......in other words, I couldn't restore to any of the 4 restore points.

I need help. I'd like to go back to IE 6 since it worked just fine for me....or get IE 7 figured out.....but I don't know how to do that.

Can someone please help me? I'm running Windows XP Home with SP2 and have Nortor IS, but have very little of anything else....seems odd that there isn't much loaded on my new build yet.

Would someone please help me figure out why the IE 7 upgrade won't work and why it locks up my computer....or tell me how to go back to IE 6....Thanks guys.

Have you checked your proxy configuration? It determines what network to use to access the internet.

Also, try turning off the firewall in NIS to see if that helps. Sometimes, after I have installed a new application that accesses the 'net, it will seem to just sit there for no reason. However, NIS pops up a window saying that a new program is trying to access the internet blah, blah. Problem is that the window is usually buried under all the others so you can't see it.

Johnny, thanks so much for responding so quickly. I'm home sick and have nothing to do except tweak my new build and I screwed that up this morning.

I hate to admit this, but how do I check my proxy config? And what do I do when I get there? Remember, I'm a newbie but follow you leaders to "the word". You tell me what to do and I'll do it......assuming I can figure it out.

BTW, what would make a computer run slow.....I've upgraded the memory to the max and it's still slow loading programs, sites, etc.

In IE7 on the right-hand side, click the "Tools" button and choose "Internet Options". In the dialog that opens, click the "Connections" tab. Click the "LAN settings" button. You'll see a number of check boxes. The first:

[x] Automatically detect settings

should be checked (usually). If it is and you are having problems, you may need to change the settings. If so, check the "Use proxy server for you LAN.....".
In the IP address box you will need to put the IP address of your link to the internet such as a DSL modem. Port should be 80.

Close all the dialogs, close IE and restart it.

Please post back the results.

Thanks Johnny, while you were away from your IE7 computer I went to another site and found a way to remove IE7 from my computer (and BTW, going back to IE6 from IE7 fixed the problem). What's wrong with IE7 anyway? Anyone??

Thought I'd share the method with the group.

In the "run" box type "%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe" (without the quotes of course); then follow the wizard to uninstall IE7. Restart your computer and when the desktop comes back up you'll have IE6 back again.

I waited 45 minutes for IE7 to open but it never did.....Johnny, since IE7 wouldn't open and was frozen....as was my mouse.....I couldn't do it your way because nothing would work.....it was frozen dead.

The procedures I used sucessfully to remove IE7 can be found at: "http:\\support.microsoft.com\kb\927177". Go have a look.

At least my computer is now fixed and I'm happy. Thanks for staying with me on this Johnny....we would have eventually solved it. Again, what is wrong with IE7......I'd like to know.....anyone?

all you have to do is:
get Opera (www.opera.com) and/or Firefox (http://www.firefox.com), enable automatic updates in windows and stay away from IE at any cost.

I believe you Shark.....I have both Firefox and IE6 on one of my machines. Would having both on the same machine cause problems.....that thing is as slow as molasses.

Think I'll put it on my new build and forget about IE....thanks for the support.

BTW, which is best....Opera or Firefox?

I just had to repair a PC that was powercycled when it was installing IE7
was crazy, missing files all over the place
had to reboot about 20 times to even get it tell me all the files I was missing so I could get to the desktop!

why does IE7 need to break things needed to get into your profile in order to install?

on the plus side I did get it uninstalled, only to find it didn't back up the files properly so I had to reinstall it
...
after that I removed all shortcuts to it and installed firefox

i use both FF and Opera. however i tend to prefer Opera.
but i think it's just a matter of personal preference and the fact Opera is just more secure (http://secunia.com/product/10615/).

You would think programmers getting paid big $$$$'s at Microsoft could figure it out.......someday maybe. They're too busy developing new programs I guess to care about supporting us by getting IE7 squared away.

It's strange to hear that people have such a weird problems with IE7. When I installed IE7 on my PC I didn't have any problems whatsoever.

Although I agree that Firefox/Opera is preferable choice over IE.

sure. opera is a standalone browser as well as FF.
you can have all those browsers installed without problems. if you dont like any of them, you can safely uninstall them since they dont touch any system files.
if you're going to use Opera, be sure to check the Opera Help (http://help.opera.com/) and Opera Tutorials (http://www.opera.com/support/tutorials/), since it has a shitload of hidden stuff, functions and shortcuts :)

It's strange to hear that people have such a weird problems with IE7. When I installed IE7 on my PC I didn't have any problems whatsoever.
Most common problems i heard after IE7 installation are missing toolbars/menues and browser crashes due to incompatible plugins. however that problem is new to me too.

Oh they know... Ten years ago they were trying to kill netscape and wowe the browser deeply into the OS...

It bites them (security-wise) every day ever since.

I tried Netscape as my ISP once back in the "early" days and everytime I logged on I'd get a virus, trojan horse, something.....totally weird....and I mean EVERY time I logged on!

It was really unbelievable....I've never used Netscape ever again.

AOL have finally killed Netscape - conceding 6.5% of the browser market isn't worth their while.

Netscape went pooey after version 4, IMHO. Always used it before that.
