View Full Version : HDV 720p25 / Blackmagic 10bit

Hi,

I am using FreeBSD and mencoder to do batch video postprocessing.

Apparently mencoder can’t handle the HDV 720p25 files from our JVC camera’s or the BlackMagic 10bit uncompressed files we‘ve captured from tape…

How can I read HDV 720p25 or BlackMagic files with mencoder and FreeBSD, Linux?

Thanks,
Jan

I think those are pretty standard MPEG-2 stuff, so they should work fine. Do you use the latest MPlayer/MEncoder SVN version (if not, you should)? Copy the complete output of "mplayer -v -vo null -nosound" trying to play one of those files and paste it here. Or do they play fine and there is some MEncoder-specific problem (a log will help with that too)?

or the BlackMagic 10bit uncompressed files we‘ve captured from tape…
You seem to be in luck since others have just done the work for you (if you can use w32 VFW codecs on your FreeBSD box): http://lists.mplayerhq.hu/pipermail/mplayer-users/2008-February/071810.html

Thank you for the advice.
I don't really know if my system can handle win32 VFW codecs. Is this a mencoder compile option or a completely seperate thing? Where can I find more on that subject? I'll try Google anyhow ;-)

This is the output of the "mplayer -v -vo null -nosound" command:

Thank you for the advice.
I don't really know if my system can handle win32 VFW codecs. Is this a mencoder compile option or a completely seperate thing? They should work if you have a 32-bit kernel, or if you compile MPlayer and MEncoder against 32-bit libraries. Then all you need are the codec files in the right place. See MPlayer's homepage and documentation for more information.

MPlayer 1.0rc2-4.2.1 (C) 2000-2007 MPlayer Team
Update MPlayer/MEncoder to the latest SVN whenever you are having these kind of problems. MPlayer and FFmpeg improve quickly, so sometimes the issues have been already resolved.

Fourcc: hdv5 Codec: 'HDV 720p25'
Ok, this is a new fourcc (it's not in SVN either, yet). The video is probably still MPEG-2, so try editing your codecs.conf (apparently you use /root/.mplayer/codecs.conf). Search for lines that contain "hdv2" and write a similar line right below, but change hdv2 to hdv5. Like this:
videocodec mpeg12
info "MPEG-1 or 2 (libmpeg2)"
comment "with postprocessing"
status working
format 0x10000001 ; MPEG-1
format 0x10000002 ; MPEG-2
fourcc "DVR "
fourcc hdv2
fourcc hdv5 ; HDV 720p25
fourcc mpg1
fourcc PIM1 ; Pinnacle hardware-MPEG-1
fourcc VCR2
fourcc mpg2,MPG2
fourcc MPEG
fourcc hdv3 ; HDV 1080i50
fourcc mx5p ; MPEG IMX 625/50 (50 Mb/s)
fourcc MMES,mmes ; matrox mpeg2 in avi
driver libmpeg2
; dll "libmpeg2"
out YV12,I420,IYUV
out 422P
There is another similar section for "videocodec ffmpeg2" (and a backward-compatibility-section for ffmpeg12), so you can change that too.

If this doesn't help, upload a small sample clip somewhere so that we can try it, or write a support request to the mplayer-users mailing list. That should be done also if you get it to play, as was done in the BlackMagic thread I linked to.

I suppose it has to do with my two following questions:

I am using the FreeBSD AMD64 version, not the i386... The Win32 codecs don't build on AMD64 (it says). I overided this in the Make file and it seems to compile without errors... if it works thats another question ;-) So: are my win32 codecs working?
I've added a custom codecs.conf. Before mplayer was using the build in codecs.conf. Apparantly mplayer doesn't use both the custom and build in version now, but only the incomplete custom one. This results in only "videocodec mpeg12" to work. So I haven't got for example any sound because mplayer can't find the codec... Can I output the build in codecs.conf to merge it with my custom one?

Hope I'm making my point clear ;-)

Thanks,
Jan

No, you need a 32-bit MPlayer built against 32-bit system libraries for them to work. One way to do it would be to have a complete 32-bit environment within chroot, but there may be other possibilities (such as 32-bit libraries installed alongside 64-bit ones), so look around for FreeBSD-specific information.

I don't think you can merge them*, but you can get the latest full codecs.conf from the SVN repository, even via the web interface: http://svn.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/trunk/etc/codecs.conf?view=co
* Edit: Sorry for the bad wording, Of course, I meant that I don't think interleaving custom codecs.conf with built-in data is currently possible on the fly, as you noticed.

And since the hdv5 fourcc addition worked, could you report it on the mplayer-users mailing list so that it will get added to the built-in codecs.conf and will therefore work automatically in the future for everyone?

Jan Catrysse

I've merged the two codecs.conf files. HDV works fine now.
Attention: I had to change the release date to a later one!

I'll post the info to the mplayer-users mailing list.

I'm looking into the 32bit library issue. I've read about this in the past but I don't find it again :-)

I'll look further and I'll post a reply if successful.

Thanks again for you support.

Cya soon.

And since the hdv5 fourcc addition worked, could you report it on the mplayer-users mailing list so that it will get added to the built-in codecs.conf and will therefore work automatically in the future for everyone?

I already added it, and to all MPEG-2 codecs (esp. ffmpeg12 which works much better on damaged streams).
