DVD VS Bluray Quality

Is it me or have they downgraded the quality of ordinary dvds to make bluray look better.I only have to look at file sizes of newer DVDs to think so.

Is this really an original DVD source? It's disturbing. Highly so, I might add.

DVDs benefited physically from HD-DVD, as in theres less badly pressed discs

as for mastering
its only as good as the last idiot that touched it...

Is this really an original DVD source? It's disturbing. Highly so, I might add.Its from a very high quality re-encode, so its actually masked a little bit of the original blocking/ringing, which obviously was worse without an inloop filter in between.

Its both high-motion and bad encoding. What happens is the encoder hits the max bitrate easily due to the massive motion and sharp lines eating up bits, and then the VBV kicks in, slinging the quantizer up to absurd values.

TV broadcast? I've seen amateur AVI fansubs that looked better than that. :rolleyes:

well, playing devil's advocate here, i'd have to say that's incredibly difficult footage.

also if that's a FUNimation release it'll probably be multiangle, limiting the max bitrate to 8000 - all audio - all subtitle streams included. that means probably 7000 CBR at the very best for video or the disc will not compile.

and it's not like denoising will help a digitally originated title - all it can possibly do is remove detail, though there can be a balance between removing "superfluous" detail and making the video more digestible for the encoder.

i'd be highly surprised if DVDs are deliberately being encoded badly to push (unnecessary?) new formats. that strikes me as just retarded behaviour, though dumber things have happened.
