View Full Version : Does anybody use the Winamp media player?

Just wondering. I had version 2.x installed, still use it
for playing occasional mp3 music.
However, I needed to install the latest V5.22 to get some
files necessary for MEgui aac encoding. As soon as I nabbed the files, I uninstalled Winamp 5.22 and used system restore
to remove all traces of it.
Perhaps I was being unfair and should have at least looked
at it. But then, I don't see many others talking about it
either.
At the moment I use WMP 9/10 (2 installs of XP), VLC and
Media Player classic (real and quicktime aternative). I never really got into "playlists" or Internet radio tuners, etc, etc, I just use the players "on demand", as it were.

Any particular merit to the Winamp player?

Nope. None whatsoever.

For music it is my favorite player. Does everything that I want it to do. I do recommend disabling a lot of stuff during installation. You probably won't need/use most plugins and library stuff.

I play back all my audio files with Winamp Lite since like... forever. :)

I am using newest Winamp 5.52 for audio playback. I really like look and feel of new Bento skin (IMHO, it is much better than both classic skin and modern skins in older versions of Winamp).

Yep, just disable stuff you don't need during installation. Lite version works, too, if you just need the absolute minimum. Lol, I'm still using the classic skin, well one of the old v2 skins. Been using it since Winamp 2.XX.

I do have Media Library installed and for my meager needs, it works quite well. I don't need it to organize my music for me anyways. I can do that by myself.

Winamp's the only thing I've found that easily rips CDs (even though I use CDex), plays back nearly everything (it has a DShow plugin), has a clear media library, and simple read/write functionality with MP3 players, iPods and PSPs. IMHO, it beats WMP hands down, but struggles with video capabilities, so MPC wins on that count. :)
