Very blocky encode with MeGui

Hi all, Ive tried encoding several of my DVD's into x264 videos, Ive been using the HQ-Insane settings with Clever anamorphic encoding and overcropping, while letting the "Analyse" feature work out any extra bits, Ive also ticked Anime on my animation DVDs then clicked Analyse.

Anyway, this problem seems to come up on all my movies, where everything is blocky, very fine blocks, but blocky all the same

These blocks are not visible when In the original file so im not sure whats causing it, any ideas how to fix it? Its takes like 20 hours to do an encode for me on these settings so its a bit of a hassle.

it's not a megui problem.
you can try rising the deblocking values in the profiles up to 0 but that fine blocking is a x264 standard behaviour.

So a deblocking value of 0 will help? what will a positive value do?.

You don't need to use HQ-Insane; if its taking too long, lower the settings a bit.

What kind of bitrate are you using?

It depends movie to movie, Im trying to keep it under 1.4GB with AC3 Audio, (Which is very buggy in MeGui btw, I havent gotten a single good encode out of it audio wise, it always downmixes, or freezes, or sets delays I didnt ask for) Which usually puts the video bitrate between 1500-1700 depending ont he length of the movie, The speed at HQ-Slowest is 6.75FPS, on Insane its about 2FPS, but the quality is noticeably better.

are you possibly having problems with encding to a too low resolution and upscaling on playback?

No, Its 720x576 originally and im not resizing it, just cropping it and when its played back its not upscaled.

I tried boosting the deblocking strength in increments, but even up to 5 for both values gives me a very blocky picture, especially in anime, every edge shows as a staircase instead of curves.

Try decoding it with ffdshow and output to RGB32 with "High quality YV12 to RGB conversion" checked.
If that fixes your problem the error that you see is not caused by the encoder used but by the chroma upscaling after the video is decoded.

Nope, It didnt help, Im now doing the same encode with Xvid, Apart from setting the bitrate and motion detection it didnt seem to offer me any other quality options (Are there any?) Anyway, Its running at 40FPS vs the 1-2FPS I get under x264 and the test file I did looked brilliant, Which is odd because I thought x264 was supposed to offer better quality.

Looks like bad deinterlacing, given the first sample image. What kind of an AviSynth script are you using?

Not being de-interlaced properly if you ask me, this would be especially noticeable on anime "curves" due to contrast...

Yeah, there's no deinterlacing in there. Try checkmarking the Anime box in MeGUI's AVS Script Creator, and Analysing, that usually does a good job detecting interlacement and applying deinterlacing. Make sure the Deinterlace box is checkmarked, too :p

Can you upload a small segment of your source? Make sure not to re-encode, just cut.

Ive already encoded everything with Xvid instead of x264, no blockyness at all.

I always ticked anime (For animated sources) then hit analyse, still blocky, Oh well.

Not sure why, I used the same AVS script for both, with x264 everything had small blocks around the edges, I dont get this on Xvid

Ive already deleted everything, Space is a premium at the moment especially when you're dealing with 10 DVD's taking up 7-8GB each
