I'm not sure I'm quite describing the "problem" correctly, or that I have my terminology right, so apologies if not.

I'm backing up American Gangster, which like a number of other movies I've seen lately has a theatrical release version (Title 2) and an extended version (Title 1) on one disk, I believe with a great deal of shared video. An initial menu prompts for a choice of versions, and I'd like to retain this option/structure. Shrink shows the two titles, a combined time of 5:32 (h:mm), and a very aggressive amount of compression necessary (46.8%) to fit onto a DVD-5. Given the shared video, the compression requirement reported doesn't seem correct. Can anyone shed light on this? THANKS.

Hi!

If you examine the files of the original DVD, you'll see that, as opposed to MOST DVDs, the disc contains absolutely no trailers or video "extras" (Only an audio commentary by Ridley Scott). The entire DVD9 is filled by the movie - including those bits required for the 16 minutes or so added for the "extended version".

Therefore, I see nothing unusual in the percentage of compression required for a full disc copy - and the results, by the way, are quite acceptable.

One of the few similar DVDs was the single disc latest version of "King Kong" - also with very good results...

What you said. I dug deeper, stripped out the unnecessary little bits, subtitle streams, etc., did the math, and the compression seems reasonable for the length of the longer title. The results seem OK as well (on the PC anyway).
