View Full Version : Highest Quality Encoder for 90minutes + 1.4GB

Hi,

I've been using AutoGK and MeGUI.

I want the best quality at 1.4GB file size and encoding time = 80< minutes.

My system:
3.12GHz E6400 Core2Duo
2GB 6400 RAM
3 SATA II HDD's

I used meGUI (x.264), this has inferior quality when set to fastest run (1P maxspeed [or something]) at 1.4GB file size.
The best so far is AutoGK (Xvid), takes about 80-90minutes and doesn't have those weird lines which meGUI produces at maxspeed profile.

What would be your recommendations for best quality about 80minutes encode time at 1.4GB file size??
I'm encoding 2 hour DVDs (4GB) usually
cheers! the attachment contains some good quality/fast logs if it helps.

"Weird lines"? Are you sure you aren't having an issue with IVTC/interlacing?

x264 will definitely produce the best quality.

First off, this sounds suspiciously like rule 12. Remember, there's no best. And without knowing the source, there's no way to say "this particular codec is best for this material."

With that disclaimer, I agree with Dark_Shikari. *as a generality*, I find x264 to be better than xvid on the material I encode (which is anime-ish), particularly at lower bitrates. However, it seems like you're aiming for ~1600kbps, which is decently beefy.

The only other thing I see: 80 minutes to encode a 2hour movie is pretty short. The filters you can use to clean the source will be limited. But it's your decision.

well, when I use the max speed (x.264) profile it processes at 100FPS~ but looks fuzzy and generally not good.

Compared with autogk (xvid) same processing speed 100FPS~ but looks great.

Yeah I'm going to experiement with different codecs and settings, until I can find one which will process at 100FPS and look better than what autogk (xvid) produces. hmm....

edit: yeah 80minutes doesnt sound like a long time, but to be honest I'm only encoding 'adult movies'. I can skimp on the quality somewhat compared to a normal movie.

x264 is decently slow relative to xvid (at least in my experience), especially if you want good quality with it at low bitrates. I'd really recommend a 2-pass if you're trying to hit a target bit rate --- it's not supposed to be that much slower than 1-pass, but with better quality.

However, if you're using x264 and you want good quality, I think it's the general consensus it's going to have to be slower than xvid.

Ahh I see, thank you!
I'll just stick with xvid then.

If you use megui, make sure that you've checked the interlace tab in the script creator. An ivtc/deinterlace will make it slower but a lot cleaner (no lines).
