Hi all, I recently got a movie in MKV and I am trying to re-encode it in divx format... I start the encode and everything is running fine... I have a quad core, and I set it to 3 threads but it only uses 50% CPU... anyways, thats not my problem... 20 mins into an encode my monitor goes blank and I cant restore it... I tried turning screensaver off, and nothing works... computer is still on, I think it may have crashed or something... tried multiple times, still nothing... No overheating, so I doubt its any hardware problems... This is since the newest version... any help would be appreciated

it IS an hardware or system problem... if the system hangs using a program, then the system is unstable
also use 4 threads for quad cores...

sorry wasnt sure if i should have posted it as its own or in that forum... I just need some help! It worked fine before the update, system is custom built by me, about 3 mths old, XP Media Center Ed., 1 cd/dvd drive, 1 HDD, both sata... never had any problems... could it be the movie thats making it crash? I havent tried converting another one since the update, just that one... I will try and post results...

@ Shark - i select 4 for threads and it never uses above 75% overall CPU usage

xvid multithreading is not very efficient, try playing with the number of threads until you get the maximum encoding speed (CPU utilization is not a good way to measure speed).

than what is a good way to measure speed? I would figure the more CPU%, the more FPS encoding... Not true?

x264 is much more efficient at multithreading than Xvid.

I have a DVD player that plays Xvid, but it wont read 1280x720 HD resolutions (even if I convert them to xvid from MKV or whatever, with low bitrates (4mb/s) it says video resolution unsupported)

so I have to play them thru my Xbox 360 or PS3, and they both play xvid and I dont know what else to convert them into... what will either console play? I know PS3 plays mp4... but I like xvid too much... what should I make the video file into, mp4? and which container to use so it will play on either console

Oh and the reason I started this thread was because MeGUI would crash when I started an encode, but it turned out it wasnt hardware related or anything, as I am encoding a 1hr 50min HD movie to xvid right now, over 1hr and its going fine... that means that the crash must have been from the other movie I was encoding... Has anyone ever had this problem? Can a movie cause a crash from encoding? It was MKV (but so is the one that is encoding fine right now)
