Hello,
I have my notebook hooked up to a projector via VGA. When I play anything in MPC, there is nothing but black in the MPC window. Both WMP and VLC work fine, it is just MPC that will not display anything. Any ideas how to fix it?

Change the renderer from Overlay to VMR9 or EVR, or Haali's if you can use it.

Look in MPC menu for play>filters while you play your video. When you play a media file it should give show you which filter that is in use from splitter up to what renderer that are in use (for a video you will have at least two stream: one for audio and one for video image).
Renderer is the last stage in filter chain that interact with hardware driver.
Windows Media Renderer (WMR) in MPC can be found from WMR7 which is for DirectX7 (older type of video card) uip to WMR9 for DirectX9. There different mode for WMR which you search more info on this site or use google in a combo like "WMR9 wiki". Do a search on "DirectShow wiki" with google and you will find out more for how Media Player Classic work with filters (which is actually directshow based) to process media files.
VLC, MPlayer (and SMPlayer) are packages which contain their own set of splitter, codecs and renderer with a player.
Make sure that you have internal codec support set in option>internal filters (check also option>play back>output for type of renderer). If you can not decode your video then you might want to install FFDSHOW trayout to handle both video and audio.
DOOM9 FFDSHOW tryout (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=120465&highlight=ffdshow)
It is possible that your video card is limited to only focus on one display and the second will not work if it isn't set to the same resolution. Give more info about your video file and your hardware, if you can not solve it by your self.

(Will let you see information about video file and what codec that are in use.)
Use from Windows Desktop: Start>run...
Type: Dxdiag and enter.
It will let you run directX diagnostic tool to see basic info about hardware, OS and what type of video driver that are installed.

On my laptop, I just put a MPC shortcut on the desktop of the other monitor (or projector). Double-click the icon, and it should work. Works for me, at least.

There are different situations:
1) one output, either notebook screen or external monitor
2) two outputs, cloned
3) two output, extended desktop
Cloning and Overlay renderer is what is problematic.

There is always the 'brute force' method. Open DxDiag and on the display tab(s) turn off acceleration.
