Sorry for this noob question but I cant find a way to spit big mkv files without re enconding...

Mkvmerge has an option to split while muxing.

Hi foxyshadis...you have helped quite a few times. :-)
Will something like Gsplit also work? I know I wont be able to play the file unless I put it together again but at least I can back it up to DVDs.

Any binary splitting program can split an mkv but if you use mkvmerge's way then all parts are independently playable. I'm not familiar with gsplit but a quick Google search seems to suggest it produces something like a split archive. If that is correct then yes, you can use it just like Winzip, Winrar, 7-zip.

Going to check mkvmerge as that sounds like my original idea :-)
