How good is PS3 just for BD playback?
Looking for a cheap BD player, would PS3 be a good choice. Or is it worth spending little more for something better?
I would have to lock up the PS3 somewhere, can't stand how ugly that thing is.

It is both the best and most annoying player you can find.
Best since it's a fully powered PC, so they can add features with a simple firmware upgrade (and both storage space and networking is there so profile 2.0 is guaranteed.. the only question is when), and being a PC it fast.. currently no other player can beat the PS3 in loading times or so I've heard (except if you use a real PC of course).
And annoying because
1) Is has no IR remote, and the Bluetooth models don't allow you to turn on/off the device
2) It contains a fan which can get quite noisy (yeah I know, some people say the fan never comes on, others say it's on all the time and very distracting.. obviously it depends on where you put the device and how good airflow is)
3) it most definitely doesn't fit in with your other CE equipment
Last but not least, there's currently no support for lossless DTS. While it's almost certainly possible to add this via software upgrade, one has to wonder why it's not there yet (and no word from Sony, even though Fox exclusively uses DTS MA for lossless audio).
The only worthwhile alternative imo would the the Panasonic BD30.. it has an LFE bug though (see avs for more details and a workaround). The new BD50 looks interesting (fully featured player, profile 2.0, support for all audio formats, etc.) but it's not out yet and it will certainly cost a pretty penny due to the fact that it's the first truly complete player.

PS3 is indeed the best player. For the price of 400 euro you also get very good console! It also plays avi (Divx+mp3), mp4 (AVC+AAC) , m2ts (AVCHD - camcorder standard AVC+AC3). You get also very handy www browser. Don't hesitate any minute :)

thanks for reply, i might as well wait for BD50, some rumors say that price might be $600. I hope its less.

Rumor has it the fan noise is much better on the 40GB models. I have a 60GB and if you put it in an enclosed area, it sounds like a jet. Kind of annoying unless you are watching Top Gun. :)

Sorry... 1) is just not true ... You can power on/off the device perfectly using the (bluetooth) remote... I do it very often... Only strange things is:
If you kind of unplug the ps3 (got a main switch in my living room for all "entertainment devices") while it is running you are not able to power it on using the remote...
But once you started it again everything is fine...
To switch it off: Hold down the "Playstation" Key... Chosse "turn off system" and "yes" ... To turn it on again: Just press "PS" key again...
Works fine...
2) got a 40GB model and have to say: The fan isn't noticeable most of the time when watching blurays or streamed content...

Your response to my point 1 just underlines that the PS3 is flawed with respect to power on/off via remote - it needs to work all the time and it needs to work by pressing a singöe button.. not 3+. And try doing that with an universal remote ;)
And what wa unclear about my point 2? Didn't I mention that there are different opinions? Why can't you acknowledge that some people find the device makes too much noise?

For 1) If you'd wrote it's not possible to turn off the device using only on single button - I would'nt have replied to it ... But you didn't ;)
I think the current generation of game-consoles got more of a computer - so I try not to shut it down by pulling the power cord... This is the only circumstance I know of which makes it impossible to power on using the remote... (After establishing power again)...
The universal remote thing indeed is a problem...
For 2) another poster mentioned that he has read/heard something about the 40Gb Model to make less noise... I've got absolutely no problem with your opinion... I just wanted to give my feedback about my 40GB Model...Why can't you acknowlegde that sony MIGHT have done something about it ?

How good of BD player is PS3?
The best.
I don't know how close people are to their PS3 and how often they use the "mute" option :D ...but 3 m in front of it with the home cinema at a confortable volume level...I have never noticed any noise while watching a movie and I'm not exactly a bad ear
The only thing that PS3 doesn't have to be perfect for BD are:
-Bitstreaming for Losssless audio, which will be activated soon, after they release the "DTS-HD MA internal decoder-with" firmware version, becoming the only BD player which internally decode all audio BD codecs to multichannel PCM.
-Allowing blacker-than-black in RGB mode? Anyway, this is useless for movies...since they are encoded using a limited range (16-235)
About the 3+ button to turn off...XDXDXD
As Doom9 said, It can be easily updated so any BD playback option that other players have and PS3 don't, Sony will care about including it in future firmware versions
