hi all,

I am to be frustrated of my htpc with PowerDVD Ultra...

I'm thinking, it can be the better way, to buy a ps3.
One point is, I have backuped bludiscs. I know, the USB-ports at ps3 can only read Fat32 with max nearly 40 GB. I want more, and my question is, if I use a NAS, can a ps3 connect to the NAS and play the backuped blu discs ?
I think, because I have found it in the web, with streaming from a NAS to ps3, from the specification it dosn't work, coerrect ?
The 'only way' can be, to make a share at the NAS, and the ps3 indentify the 'bludisc-folder' and play it. I can use Gbit cable LAN, I think it's fast enough.

have anybody tested this, or an other way with success ?

As a new PS3 owner, I am also interested in this.

I would also like to know if the NAS would need any particular software, or can a free Linux distribution be installed.
Once up and running, what file formats can be streamed, what are the limitations regarding file size and video resolution when streaming?

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I assume the OP would also need to know this info.
There are lots af posts regarding playback on the PS3, but it is extremely confusing with a lot of contradictory info, so any input would be appreciated.

Cheers, Beastie.

Ok... You will need some kind of server up and running... Good example is "Twonky Vision" but there are also other upnp/dlna media servers out there and an increasing number of NAS-Devices already got one preinstalled...

There are no limitations of resolution or filesize I know of...

Regarding formats... This is really kind of anoying since you have to know the difference between containers and codecs...

video h264 is a codec... Along with audio (be it aac or ac3 or something else) and other info this is muxed into a container...
vob or even mp4(!) are containers...
So knowing the ps3 supports container X does tell you nothing...

Supported video codecs:
- h264 (avc)
- xvid/divx (mpeg4-asp)
- mpeg2
- vlc1

Supported audio codecs:
- ac3
- dts(?)
- multi channel aac
- mp3
- ...

Supported containers:
- vob
- m2ts
- avi
- wmv
- mp4

Shortcomings:
As far as I know there is no known way to preserve complete bluray/dvd info like subtitles or chapters.
MKVs have to be remuxed to another container (m2ts or vob) which is possible and pretty fast (remuxing involves no recording... just the way the video, audio and other informations are stored in the container has to be changed)...

PS3 doesn't like ac3 audio and h264 in mp4 containers - only h264+mutli channel aac does work - this could be a problem if you got an older av-receiver... ps3 is able to do some kind of downmix to 2channel stereo (maybe including dolby pro logic - but I'm not sure) which could keep you happy until you get a new av-receiver...

Right now I'm doing recodes to either
divx+ac3 (autogk)
or
h264+aac (nero recode)

Thanks for the info. After some testing, I have discovered that TS container with h264 video and ac3 audio work great, at HD resolution (1920x1080). My process is here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1111084#post1111084).
My next task is to try and find the max bitrate h264 video that the PS3 will decode.
