I am trying to get all my movies into a nice format for playing from my HTPC w/o having to get up to put the damn discs in and out all the time.

My idea was to rip the discs, take the movie only video + sound and put them, as-is no compression etc., into an MKV container somehow so then I could just point my HTPC frontend to a folder of the files, like I have done for regular DVDs, and play them that way.

I know how to rip the discs, but after that I'm not sure what tools to use. How can I go from the ripped disc files on my HD to putting the video+audio in an MKV container or something similar preserving all original quality? I've searched and read, but I can't find anything specific.

Well after a few more hours of digging around I think I figured it out.

For HD DVD --> MKV, the best solution currently is eac3to.

I'm looking to something similar, but with compression. What is the best way to back up my HD-DVDs to around DVD-R size (either DL or DVD5)? I don't have a tonne of HD space to back up uncompressed. Thanks in advance!
