View Full Version : Resizing anamorphic NTSC dv correctly

I have looked in the FAQ (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=30495)

And it has a "Q3: How do I properly resize a DV video?" but it addresses only PAL.

Would it be possible to address the anamorphic NTSC dv? Perhapes add it to the faq?

The thing is - most of my anime dvds are 720x480, wide-screen(anamorphic) - and as far as I know, I need to crop them down to 704x480 and THEN resize to a 16:9 resolution - but I'm uncertain in it, and would like some help...

Thanks.

P.s - I tried, I really did - reading this link: http://lipas.uwasa.fi/~f76998/video/conversion/ - but I just don't "completly" get it... Suppose it's beyond me at this stage...

There's a good explanation here:

I'm not sure that that's all there is to it... I mean, sure, I now understand the whole 704 vs 720 thingy, but in the FAQ it says there's a 9.4% deviation since the DV pixels aren't square, but are rectangular.

Now, if that applies to PAL, maybe it applies to NTSC as well? Same pixels after all, just different resolution and stuff, no?

Crop to 704, resize to 854x480.

Or don't crop (keep 720), and resize to 872x480.

David.

I have a request - could you please edit your reply, and add a 16:9 NTSC letterbox resizing resolution? As well as 4:3 NTSC resizing resolution?

4x3 NTSC square pixel from 704x480 content is just 640x480, or 704x528 - depending on whether you want to resize up or down. Going to 704x528 will break interlacing unless you handle it properly, while 640x480 throws away a little resolution - pick your poison. Most people go for 640x480.

If the original is 720x480 and you don't want to crop to 704, then resize to 654x480 (not mod 16), or 720x528.

For 16x9 content letterboxed into a 4x3 NTSC frame, you keep the middle 360 lines, so from 704x480 you crop to 704x360 and then resize to 640x360 or 704x396 (not mod 16).

Similarly, for 720x480 (if you don't want to crop to 704) crop to 720x360 and then resize to 654x360 (not mod 16) or 720x396 (not mod 16).

Hope this helps. If it's wrong, I'm sure someone will correct it!

Cheers,
David.
