View Full Version : "The directory selected does not contain DVD material"

I just started getting this weird error message when trying to use DVD-RB v1.26.6. The program worked fine till today, and now I can't open any DVD folder I've got on my HD.
The only thing different from my last project are the critical Microsoft updates that were downloaded and installed yesterday. I'll try to hunt the updates down and uninstall them later tonight to see if I can fix the situation. If that doesn't work, I'm totally baffled:confused:

You could get that error if:
1. The source directory contained no IFO files.
2. There are no VOBs.
3. None of the VTSs meet the minimum size criteria (set by VTS_MIN_SIZE).
What O/S are you using?
Boulder
14th February 2008, 18:48
None of those apply, these folders contain regular DVD9 items.
In fact, the error doesn't come up every time..I just got one folder working but when I tried again, I got the error message.
I also uninstalled all those updates but no luck :(

I'd try a reboot. Something weird is going on if you can't get the same results twice.
Boulder

I've tried that already but it doesn't seem to help. Is there any way to try debugging the issue? I checked FileMon but it doesn't show anything weird going on.

This is what FileMon says when I try to open a directory that contains the decrypted DVD:

After that, nothing..it doesn't even try loading the IFOs. Then again, if I keep DVD-RB open and try to move any files in that directory, it seems that one IFO file is locked.
EDIT: My O/S is WinXP SP2.

I just posted v1.27 -- try that. But honestly I don't see how it would act any differently... I have no idea what's going on in this situation -- but I have to believe it is something external to DVD-RB (since it once worked and isn't happening to anyone else).
I'm also using WinXP SP2, but I haven't loaded any updates in a month or two. Are you sure you've backed out of everything that was changed?
Boulder
15th February 2008, 04:33
The only thing I cannot get rid of is one Office 2003 update, KB945185. That one cannot be uninstalled for some reason.
I got it working again on several occasions and managed to start a new re-encoding project. I'll try upgrading ASAP and see if that helps.

Weird.
Boulder
15th February 2008, 17:06
What kind of a method does DVD-RB use to retrieve the needed information? For example, PowerDVD doesn't have problems opening the folders and playing them like regular DVDs, VOBBlanker shows no warnings and ImgTool Classic creates working images.

Standard O/S calls... nothing unusual. Do you have access to a second computer you could install and test it on?
Boulder
15th February 2008, 18:05
Sure, but it might take a while. I'll try running in safe mode first, maybe that provides a clue. If it works there, it must be something that is loaded during normal startup.
jdobbs
15th February 2008, 18:27
What Anti-Virus software are you using? Any updates there recently?
Boulder
15th February 2008, 19:17
I'm using F-Secure Client Security v7.10, no recent updates to the program itself. I tried running in safe mode but it didn't do any good either, I've also tried disabling the anti-virus software. I get to a second computer on Sunday so that should provide some more clues.
Would you like me to email you the IFOs to doublecheck them? If I understand correctly, DVD-RB checks the IFOs first?
Boulder
15th February 2008, 19:30
Another funny thing is that when I try to open a folder on my external (USB 2.0) HD, there usually are no problems. Loading from there still doesn't work every time..sometimes it helps to close DVD-RB and open it again.
Boulder
15th February 2008, 21:38
I traced this problem - it is caused by the DVD that I'm going to process next. For some reason, if I try to load it (and it fails) and then load any other DVD folders, they fail too. I probably should try some other program than DVD Decrypter (or RipIt4Me) to rip the VOBs, maybe that'll do the trick. Funny that all the other programs worked just fine but DVD-RB complains about it.
jdobbs
15th February 2008, 21:47
Glad you found it. I'm not sure what you mean by "load"? You mean load into DVD-RB?
Boulder
16th February 2008, 09:47
Yes, loading --> opening the folder in DVD-RB to start processing.
jdobbs
16th February 2008, 13:07
Interesting. I'll check the logic and see if maybe files aren't being closed correctly following open failures.

@Boulder
Maybe check it out in Process Explorer and see what has got a hold of what.

I've run into the same error as Boulder. I get the error with RB 1.266 and RB 1.271 but RB Free 98.2 seems to work OK.
RB seems to be the only app I can't access the DVD folders. I can access and transcode the DVD folder files just fine using DVD Shrink or DVDFab Platinum. I don't have any problems with VobBlanker, PGCEdit, etc.

@Boulder and BRN - I got this today!!!!
This is what happened. A disk was in the DVD drive and DVDRB tried to read it - I stopped this. Then I tried to open a source folder on my hard drive (which definintely contained DVD material) and got the error.
Close Rebuilder and Kill it in task manager (where it still was). Reopen and you are good to go.

@Blutach - No luck for me.
No disk in my drive, double check task manager to be sure RB isn't running and I still get the same error.
I tried adding VTS_MIN_SIZE=25625 to the Options section of the .ini file but no difference.

Can someone give me a set of steps that will repeat this every time? If so I can figure out what's causing it. So this isn't something new with v1.27.1, it happens with 1.26.6 also?
BRN

This problem only comes up with one 1 specific disk, so far. It's Blade, The Series, Disk 2, R1. When I select the Source folder in Rebuilder Pro 1.266 or 1.271 I get the "The directory selected does not contain DVD material" error.
I've tried ripping with RipIt4Me and DVRFab and both give the same error with Rebuilder Pro but not with any other app. I was even able to do an encode using Rebuilder Free with no problems.

i am using DVD-RB 1.26.6 and having the same problem of having the “The directory selected does not contain DVD material” error. This error is driving me crazy!! i try all i can do but the error keeps showing up. I am sure that the directory is having a good DVD structure(with folder VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS)!!
i really need your help on this issue. thanks

@wilson:
the first thing you should do is upgrade to the latest release of RB. jdobbs just sent out the email for v1.27.2.

Why not just upgrade and try it out for yourself? It would be much quicker than sitting around viewing forum posts each day.
Kinda counter-productive if you ask me.

Absolutely and it would help others to know if it works or not (not least of which are the people trying to fix it).

What version of DVD Rebuilder are they using? If they aren't using the latest, tell them to update and try again.

I'm using version 1.28.2 and am getting the same error - in fact I just upgraded to 1.28.2 and that is when the error started. I had just completed a prep and rebuid on one dvd and then tried to open another in a different folder and I got the "The directory selected does not contain DVD material" message - and now I cannot open any folders in DVD-RB. If I reboot I can open the original folder agfain, but when I try to go to the problematic one the error begins again.
jdobbs
23rd July 2008, 16:04
Can you provide me with the path? Also, if possible, could you provide a directory of what is in it?
The fact that it requires a reboot certainly seems to indicate the problem is related to the problematic folder (rather than something internal to DVD-RB) that might be locking things up -- otherwise why would the first one continue to work?
teberly
23rd July 2008, 16:15
This may help - the problem folder contained That thing you do special edition with interleaving. I used DVD Remake to strip away one version of the film. It is the DVD Remake version that is causing the trouble (although all other programs will recognize and play from the folder - just not dvd-rb). Once it locks on the problem folder it will not open any other folders without closing the program.
jdobbs
23rd July 2008, 16:20
If you can give me that path and a directory of the folder I may be able to point out what is causing the problem.

Well, I see nothing wrong with the directory. I'm scratching my head on this... as all I do is make a set of Windows system calls to get the directory information -- and to get that error, the return is telling me that there are no IFOs.
I've had others mention this happening on USB drives... so I think "driver" -- but I have never been able to repeat it even though I've tried it on numerous USB attached drives.
Is it possible (I'm reaching) it may be an access permissions issue?
Boulder
25th July 2008, 13:55
I don't think it has anything to do with access permissions. I have one specific professionally authored DVD which always causes the issue - unfortunately I cannot remember the title right now but it's one of the kids' DVDs. Any other DVD-related program than DVD-RB opened the folder nicely, for example Media Player Classic and PowerDVD.

Funny I wondered that myself when I saw the file listing from Teberly and noticed the drive letter was 'F:'.
Quite possibly an external drive of some sort.

My system is on drive letter F.
teberly
29th July 2008, 12:10
My F: drive is just a partition on my hard drive - not a removeable drive.
I've only had this problem with one DVD - That Thing You Do special edition disc one with 2 versions of the film and interleaving - and the problem comes after I used DVD Remake to strip away the theatrical version of the film. But once the error pops up in DVD-RB it locks out all DVD folders with the same error until DVDRB is closed and restarted.

In the past I sometimes also received this error and a solution for me was running the entire DVD through FixVTS.
jdobbs
29th July 2008, 22:02
I'd like to fix this. If there is something in the structure that is causing DVD-RB to be locked out -- I really need to find out what it is. Can anyone give me an NTSC disc and a set of finite steps that will cause this. If I can repeat it, I can fix it. Without repeating it, I'll just continue "wondering".

I once again got this one, I merged two DVDs in DVD Remake Pro and tried to open the result in DVD-RB. Is there anything that could be done to debug the issue?
EDIT: actually it already happens when trying to open the folder where one of those DVDs was extracted to.
EDIT2: could it be related to the menus - I used MenuShrink on the merged DVD and now I got the folder to open in DVD-RB..
