Is there any way to tell what type of protection is being used on a particular DVD (beyond CSS)?
I hardly ever buy DVDs and when I do, they're usually cheap ones from the dollar store. However I have a friend who buys DVDs occasionally and he just bought the 2-disc, deluxe edition of Across the Universe. Unfortunately, it won't play in his Sylvania DVD/VCR combo.
This machine was bought used to replace his previous player which died. Personally, I would have bought something new, but he's the type that is always looking to save money.
Both discs play for me in my computer, but when inserted in his player, it stays on the loading screen for 30-45 seconds and then says that there's a problem with the disc. I'd try making a copy of the discs for him, but it won't play DVD-Rs either.
I emailed Sony on my friend's behalf (he doesn't have a computer) and they wrote back stating that they can't guarantee that all of their DVDs will play on every DVD player!
Anyway, I'd be curious just what type of protection is on the DVD (the back of the box mentioned copy protection) that is keeping it from playing for him. I've read about Sony's ARccoS protection, but I've also read that the compatibility problems had supposedly been fixed.
