with this libdvdnav-ifo4 you can play back N.L. titles (to date) with linux players. Tested and works with vlc and smplayer in ubuntu.
Otherwise I guess you could patch libdvdread

I'm having issues playing new Universal titles aswell (e.g. Battlestar Galactica) and the page you mentioned links to http://www.heise.de/ct/Redaktion/ghi/retch/dvd/X-ProtectDVD-Movie-Protec.html which mentions both NL and Universal. So thought this might be worth a try.
Unfortunately no succes since the disk still won't play properly. You wouldn't happen to have any other suggestions?
Btw, to see if it's being used:
libdvdnav: Using dvdnav version 0.1.10 from http://dvd.sf.net
libdvdread patched to play DVDs with DVD-Movie-Protect

I can only relate this to Gutsy (libdvdread3 isn't patched) and region 1 titles. The only discs that wouldn't play back (with vlc or mplayer) are the recent new lines - seems like region 2 is getting the worst of it now.
For vlc dl'ing the libdvdnav-ifo4 to a directory and opening vlc from there with
LD_PRELOAD=./libdvdnav.so.4.0.0 vlc works fine
For mplayer patching dvdread inside of the source then compiling made the n/l.'s I have playable
disk still won't play properly
if that's vlc try deleting the title's folder in .dvdcss
