Sorry if i post this, I would just like a pointer so I can get started ripping some dvds for future view (by my kids :) ) on a big screen.
The point is, I have the DVDs (so no HD here) and would like to rip them so they'll be viewable decently on my next gen (1080p) tv.
Should i keep the original size (was it 720x576?) or upscale and what codec would be the best for cartoons (actually I want to rip some very old anime)?
Xvid, DivX or h/x264?
I tried looking for some reviews but they're quite old and at the moment I'm "lost in information" :)
If you give me a pointer i'll find the rest by myself on the forum,

P.S. Another question which might be OT
In my future plans I'd like to set up a home video cartoon channel that plays the ripped content (easier than the dvd's and adds the "discoverabilty" factor) and I would like to know if there is any sort of program that can create let's say a "scheduled playlist" if you understand.

For cartoons, there is no question that X.264 is vastly superior to Xvid, in every way. I don't usually recomend supersampling prior to encoding, but considering how well X264 compresses cartoons, and how well non-realtime interpolation (and sharpening, and denoising) work on cartoons you should consider it; the starting quality of your material and your time constraints will probably be the most important considerations.
[edit] for processing you should look into: nnedi (interpolation), limitedsharpenfaster (sharpening, duh), dfttest (advanced spatio-temporal denoising), fft3dfilter/fft3dgpu (similar to dfttest, but less options, not quite as good, though simpler and faster), degrainmedian (fast spatio-temporal filtering), temporalremovegrainHD (bigger, better, slower degrainmedian, part of removegrainhd), awarpsharp (line thining/sharpening), frfun7 (high quality spatial smoothing), gradfun2db (banding removal and gradient dithering), mvdegrain(1/2) (motion compensated denoiser, best detail retention to noise reduction ratio of any denoiser, but has artifacts during high motion and scene changes along with being very slow).

I know it's hard to give an estimate, but roughly let's say
20 min episode of a normal dvd
how much space would it take up?
usually in divx or xvid this varies around 200 ~ 350Mb
does x264 take up much more space? By what amount (more or less)?
What is an average encoding time for a x264?
It's been such a long time since i last encoded an anime (xvid) that I don't even remember how much time it used to take but if i ain't wrong it should be around 8 hours (on my ex-p4 3pass 640x480)

For anime/cartoons in general you can get the same quality as Divx/Xvid at about 1/2-1/3 of the size, or acceptable quality for 1/4-1/7 of the size, or you can encode at about the same size and get absolutely perfect quality (if you use aq to keep gradients from banding). I can't really give you specific filesizes since different material has different bitrate requirements. For regular film content the gains aren't nearly as impressive, but still significant, especially at low bitrates.

Encoding times for x264 vary greatly based on the options you use and what your encoding, if you use fast first pass settings (as you should) the first pass will take about aslong as Xvids, the second pass runs about 2.5-4 times slower then Xvids with the settings I use. The Xvid settings I'm comparing to are, defaults + 3bframes, qpel, vhq4, b-vhq, chroma motion, trellis. Almost the slowest settings.
