View Full Version : Redistribution and 1 Extra

Not been here in a while...
Just wondering how Bitrate Redistro fits to this example:
1 Main Feature (movie)
1 Extra (featurette)
(each in its own VTS)
If I want to preserve the video of the main feature (i.e. 100%, or no compression), is there any way (or point) to use bitrate redistribution on the extra?
So far, the only way I've attempted this is to do a Full-Backup mode prepare phase, then use the Preview/Edit to set the main to 100% (and reduce the featurette until the size meets the target) - however, I get the impression that since redistro is only calculated on the main VTS, then by setting it to 100%, I am throwing away the redistro information.
Is the featurette then just being compressed in the good-old-fashioned linear/proportional way??
Cheers for any info/advice.

hmm, I've found the new setting called
"Apply Redistribution to all VTSs (series)" - would that do the right thing in my example? - i.e. allow me to leave the main movie untouched with no compression, yet still perform appropriate redistribution of the bitrates in the featurette?
btw, I am also using REDIST_USE_FINAL_Q=1 - does this work in conjunction with the "all VTSs" setting?
I ask this because the rel. notes for 1.26.5 say "a set of prediction passes are run on the
main-movie VTS", which suggests it will not work with the other VTSs.

Yes that's the setting and yes, REDIST_USE_FINAL_Q will work correctly with it.
Unfortunately, however, when you run REDISTRIBUTION you may find that the sizing won't necessarily be "no compression" anymore -- because the reallocation may take from some of the segments...
Hmm... I'm not sure what will happen when you set "No Compression" on in the segment editor... I'll have to check that.

hmm, so far I've run it thru *with* redistribution, and *without* the "Apply Redistribution to all VTSs (series)" setting enabled, and the 100% (extract only) options set in the segment preview/editor held true for the main movie.
I will try running it thru again tonight with the "Apply Redistribution to all VTSs (series)" setting enabled and let you know if it makes a difference...
cheers for the feedback,

Did you set "No Compression" as your encoder, or did DVD-RB recognize it and tell you so... that will make a difference. If you select "No Compression" it will extract it regardless of any other settings.

nope - didn't change the encoder - it was left as CCE throughout
seems like the result is exactly the same (using these steps), with or without intially applying the redist to all VTSs
after the prepare phase,
after moving the slider all the way right in the segment preview/editor for the main movie (to 100%),
and adjusting (lowering) the overall reduction level % for VTS_02 until the target size was again withing a DVD5 limit,
...all the cells in the main movie were simply extracted (and not reencoded), and...
the 2 cells in the featurette (VTS_02) were encoded with exactly the same parameters according to the .ecl file (that is, exactly the same between the two methods - with and without 'redist all VTSs')
m
ps - VTS_02's individual cell Reduction Level (%) WAS originally *different* (between cells) after the 'redist all VTSs' preparation phase (whereas it was the same when prepared without 'redist all VTSs'),
...BUT once I used the previewer/editor to adjust the overall level for VTS_02 to make the main movie 100% + reduce the featurette to make everything fit again within DVD5, *both* VTS_02 cells had the same reduction level (the same as the overall manually chosen VTS_02 level)
...so it seems like the relative bitrate distribution data was trampled by the manual VTS_02 adjustment... - perhaps this can be maintained somehow when performing an operation like this???
pps - this is all very confusing to try and explain in a concise post!

having thought about it a bit more, I guess that the bitrate redistribution info for VTS_02 would be useless if you manually adjusted VTS_01 back to 100% (no compression) *after* all the bitrate distribution calcs had already been performed for VTS_01 and VTS_02
another pass would be needed to reevaluate bitrate distribution for VTS_02 if you wanted the whole thing to fit a DVD5
perhaps an option could be put in place to indicate that the user wanted to preserve the main movie at 100% when evaluating all other VTSs for bitrate distribution?
worst-case - I guess using the method I already have gives me a simple linear reduction in bitrate for the extras which is no worse than DVD-RB ever used to be before bitrate distribution was introduced (which is frankly very good!)

@magic144:
You can do very individual and flexible redistribution across selected VOB-IDs of your choice with RB-Opt.

thanks then Sharc - I'll have a look - cheers
