DVD to MKV without reencoding?

I would like to make a mkv with untouched video and audio from a DVD. Is this possible?
Could I also save chapters from DVD into the mkv?

Extremely possible.

Just demux the main movie using PGCdemux, use ChapterXtractor on the main movie's ifo and save them in Ogg format, and then mux the results together.

Note: This is assuming you are just trying to deal with the main movie. Otherwise, it gets a lot more complicated.

All DVDs are concerts. And most of them have multi angels. I guess it is possible to have all angels saved but I think Im happy with just the main one for now.

PgcDemux will put all angles in the file! So, you have to create a single-angle file before demuxing it. It's easy with DVD Shrink in re-author mode.

i wanted to do the same thing, so i downloaded PGCdemux, but whenever i open a dvd with it "titles" gets greyed out and i can only demux the menu items. anyone know whats wrong?

You have to open the VTS_XX_0.IFO file containing the title you want to demux. VIDEO_TS.IFO contains only the Title menu.

ahh ic, if you open a random VIDEO_TS.IFO the application will lock into menus mode, this seems to a be bug, as opening any file after that will still only show menus

however restarting the program and going directly for the VTS_XX_0.IFO seems to work.

Can anyone make a detailed guide on how to do this. I think this will come in handy to many many people (like myself). First thing... what software to use (and please remember links). It would be very nice with a picture guide marking exactly what buttons to push.

Im asking this because I think the MKV container is the way of the future. I think its important to make things understandable to the common man (like myself). This process from DVD to MKV without re-encoding is in my oppinion the right way to go. I assume this process is very fast.

I realy wish there was a dedicated software for this task with one big button: "DVD to MKV".

GUIDE:

DVD to MKV in perfect quality.

I’m not sure if this is the right way to do it but I ended up with a perfect noncompressed MKV. The whole process took me around 15 - 20 min.

Software needed:

Vobedit: http://download.videohelp.com/download/Vobedit06.zip (Direct link)
MKVtoolnix: http://download.videohelp.com/download/mkvtoolnix-unicode-2.1.0-setup.exe (Direct link)

1. Open Vobedit.
2. Press ”Open”
3. Go to your “VIDEO_TS” folder that is located on your DVD and dobbelclick “VTS_01_1." (VOB)
4. Press “Demux”
5. Tick in the boxes “Demux all Video streams” and “Demux all Audio streams”
6. Browse to a location where you want to save and press “Save”. (I recommend making a new folder to contain only these new files).
7. When finished you shutdown Vobedit and open mkvmerge GUI that is located in your MKVtoolnix folder in your start menu.
8. Press “add” and browse to the files you have demuxed from Vobedit and open them.
9. Press “Browse” and choose a location and finally “Save” your perfect MKV file.

Does pgcdemux also demux the entire movie by just selecting any of the main movies VOB files? Or do you have to demux all the main movies VOB files seperately? I was surprised that Vobedit did all this by itself.

PavTube is my ripping software of choice. I own ByteCopy. Its lossless MKV mode works perfectly without compressing. I am really recommended.

I have never used or heard of the programs I highlighted in bold. So, I won't comment on them.

To answer the original question. The easiest program to use is makeMKV. It is basically a 1-click passthrough disc to mkv.
