SpruceUp and 16:9

I like SpruceUp's ease of use and AC3 compatibility w/ 5.1 audio. The downside is obviously the 4:3 output. I have been told that there is a fix/workaround for this to produce a 16:9 output. Any insight or "how to" would be appreciated (and also save me some money). Thanks.

If you encode with TMPGEnc you will then be able to use Spruceup and still get 16:9. If your talking using the original video file from a dvd then I heard you can edit the Ifo file after spruce builds the dvd with Ifoedit, but I heard most people don't have very good luck with this

That's interesting to know. I actually was re-encoding the files, but with CCE 16:9. Not sure if this would vary from TMPG, might as well give it a shot.

No joy. Although the vobs are still in fact 16:9 on the disc, it still displays stretched on standalones. Pity.

nothing should be stretched on your standalone if you encode with tmpg and build with Spruceup. I do this all the time and I get perfect letterbox on my standalone, no different than the original dvd

Commander XJL,
I normally do my encoding with CCE, which has an option for 16:9. My experience has also been a picture that is stretched. You say there is a difference if the video file is created with TMPEnc?
Could you please post your sequence of action and how you have TMPEnc configured? I love the interface on SPRUCEUP, and I've created many 4:3 DVDs. But I was thinking about shopping around for a new Authoring tool just because of this limitation.

The_Flash,
Good news. I just discovered you can use IfoEdit to correct this.
1. Use CCE to create the MPV (or M2V) with the output Aspect ratio (on the video dialog) set to 16:9 (or in TMPGEnc set Aspect Ratio to 16:9 on the Video tab).
2. Do your encoding...
3. If you set your frame to 23.976, use pulldown to make it legal for NTSC DVD.
4. Pull the video (and audio) into SPRUCEUP) as always. It will appear "stretched" in the preview mode while you're authoring - ignore it.
5. Create the Title Set on your hard drive using SPRUCEUP.
6. Use IfoEdit on the individual VTS file for the individual title set (e.g. VTS_01_0.IFO)
7. Click on VTSI_MAT on the top half of the screen.
8. Double click on VTSTT_VOBS (offset 00000200) on the bottom hald of the screen.
9. CHANGE THE ASPECT RATIO AND BURN THE DVD!!!
Derrow has rescued us once again!!!!

jdobbs you should check another thread in the IfoEdit Section on how to change for 16:9. It works fairly well, you just export to disc with SpruceUp, change some information in the .ifo's, save, then burn with Prassi or Nero. It works for me on my two standalone players (A Sony and an Apex AD-800) but not on some others (Aiwa's & Apex 500W). Still hoping to hear what else needs to be changed to make it fully compatible.

Thanks...
I should have checked that forum and I could have saved myself some time. With the latest version of IfoEdit (.8) , you don't need to calculate bits, etc... Double click on the value and a dialog pops up with buttons to push for 16:9, letterboxed, etc. Don't know if that is new, but it didn't seem to be mentioned in the text I read in the stream.

Did you edit the VIDEO_TS.IFO as well?
"You should also find the copy of this byte in video_ts.ifo and change it as well. You'll find it in VMG_VTS_ATRT, the field called VTSTT_VOBS for the appropriate vts."

I've gotten this to work on half of the players I've tried it on. Let me know if you have any problems with any other players.

That field (VTSTT_VOBS) doesn't exist in the VIDEO_TS.IFO that SpruceUp created for me. I assume the VTSM_VOBS or VMGM_VOBS implies "Menu" and VTSTT is title. I changed the VTSM_VOBS as a test and sure enough the menu for the VTS went to 16:9 as well... In my case I wanted to keep the menu at 4:3.
