divx 4.12 encode options.

im using flask xmpeg 4.2a
movie is devils advocate
having trouble getting the file size down, while retaining quality
some areas in particular, with all the flames and smoke, are very blocky.

im trying the 2pass method now to try and improve things.

Questions:
1st pass, performance/quality = fastest or slowest? ive found using speed actually gives me a smaller file, and i cant seem to see any difference... hmmmmm
and should i encode any sound on the first past?
780kbits/sec ok?
and what if i change the max keframe interval on the first pass?

what do YOU guys use for best quality that can fit on a 700mb cd.
(devils advocate is 2:18min long = 8280sec)

at 2 hours 18 mins it is going to look what i would call crappy no matter what you do. anything over 100mins i always go for 2cds.
as for your question, use slowest, always it is just plain better
and to find out what are good settings....read the guides! the gordian knot one would be useful i should think

i think that you can make pretty good looking 1cd-rips even with 100+ minute movies (at least if you watch them on tv)... i only head for 2 cd's if the movie is 120+ or i want to use a 2nd audio stream...

Sorry, but cant agree here. Its definitely possible to get a +120 mins onto 700 MB, even with nice sound like Lame ABR old routine ( i always do roughly 600 MB video, 100 MB sound ).
Reduce resolution to something like 560 * xxx and use tempsmoother (3) before resizing. Worked even fine for Gladiator .... and this movie isnt easy to rip at all ... result looks fine here, even with postprocessing level 1 - 2.

Of course, a 2 CD rip is always better choice in terms of quality, and it will give you the possibility to use AC3 surround sound ..... but it is possible to make 1 CD rips of 120+ mins movies that dont look like 'crap' ....

maybe your "hard on the edge" overclocking?
Try with 1.333 or even 1.2 GHz first. And lower the fsb-frequency to something resonable, you are frying your board. If your rig is still bugging tell us.

oh yep...
errors all the way round.

definate data corruption from 140fsb and above
(i use an arj archive and test it... many files get extracted with CRC errors - data corruption)

below 140 unknown...
but at 133 xmpeg 4.2a reboots my pc in a random fashion, and even 100 i get reboots.

compare this to when i started creating divx a month or so back, when i pumped out 2 movies with zero crashes or problems.

AND... i believe this is the same problem that killed my first mobo.
lots of IDE controller/drive errors. some issue between my 60gxp, 16gp elevated fsb and the kt133a ide controller.
both mobo's are kt133a based
old one a7v133
current one kk266-plusR
