Say I buy a camcorder that burns/stores to DVD. What format will the video be in? Will I have to rip the DVD to be able to edit the video?

It will be MPEG2 if it writes a standard DVD.
The DVD will not be encrypted, but you will have to access the files on it and likely copy them to your PC. If you call that "ripping", then yes, you will have to rip it.

Thanks. I thought DVD was a format, like MPEG2, and I would have to convert it. I'm intrigued with the flash memory camcorders, but then there's the storage capability of the dvd's. I'm in no hurry though. Thanks again.

I would stay away from anything that uses optical media, be it camcorders or digital cameras - optical media is too damn fragile and easily damaged. Sure harddrive based cams are also touchy, but i've been burned too many times by optical media to trust it anymore with anything.
