I can't speak to the OPPO 980 but I am very pleased with my PopCornHour A-100. It uses the latest chipset; Sigma Designs SMP8635 and it plays everything I throw at it. Company is very responsive and makes firmware updates at least once a month.

Might want to add the IStar to the list. It's the same as the popcornhour with a SATA connection and HDMI 1.3. Same middleware as popcornhour. Still no support for 1.3 from the vendor, but it is capable.
What chipset does the OPPO 980 use?

What chipset does the OPPO 980 use?A MediaTek chip-set that supports "std-def" MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.2 sources only....
So it's chip-set is not in the same league as the Popcorm Hour's Sigma SMP8635 chip-set, which can support std-def and "high-def" MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4.2, WMV9, MPEG-4.10 (AVC) and VC-1 sources.
Cheers

Well, if your media files are on your PC, you need to copy the files to the USB HDD.
An alternative is to put Popcorn Hour and your PC on the same LAN (like behind the same router), and let Popcorn Hour access files on your PC with NFS. I have installed a small NFS server (HaneWin (http://www.hanewin.net/nfs-e.htm)) on my Windows XP PC for that purpose. Please note that NFS works better than SMB (Samba) with Popcorn Hour.
