View Full Version : Question about multipass encoding in VirtualDub

Here's the scenerio. I setup a batch job in virtual dub to run multipass (1st), and multipass (nth) in the encoding of an HD-DVD. In the first pass, a small file is created and with the nth pass (2nd pass in this case) the file is overwritten by the end product.

Lets say that in the middle of the nth pass that virtual dub crashed or my computer randomly powered off. If I boot back up and start the nth (2nd) pass over again, will it retain the information from the first pass? The small file is gone and in its place is a partially completed file for the nth pass so I'm not sure if that's where the data for the first pass is stored or not. Will I need to redo the first pass to get the quality of a multipass encoding or does it retain the information from the first pass elsewhere?

I'm not sure if I'm being clear on this so if this is confusing let me know and I'll try to explain it another way with screenshots.

I'm not sure if its relevant, but I'm using the DivX 6.8 codec in my encoding.

Yeah, it should be fine to restart the nth pass. In addition to that little file you mentioned, there is a pass log that is created, usually in you C directory. You don't need to wory about that.

Just use the same exact settings, including directory, and start your nth pass.
