Greetings,
I D/L'd a file the other day in the divx format (missed the opening episode of a new show I really wanted to see). I haven't d/l'd a video file for years because the quality was crap and of a small res only really viewable on a puter.
Anyway, I was unprepared (really shocked) at the quality of this file. It was a 44 min episode at 350Mb using a divx extension. Quite frankly, it looks really good on a 42" W/S TV.
My question is...how was this achieved?
The episode was obviously recorded from an HD broadcast (onscreen bug). Does this make a difference to final on-screen quality? The original recording HD files must be huge (if recorded in HD). What software creates a divx extension? I've examined Dvix converter, Divx Author, and Dr Divx - not sure which one is the best or what other software does this. How does divx compare to Xvid? Any benefits of one to the other?
After viewing this file, I realised the reduced file size would be ideal for archival reasons (I keep my bits and bobs in the DVD format, which quickly eats of space). However, I'd prefer if the re-encoding solution was fairly simple (Not necessarily a one click solution though) - which had basic defaults - sort of one solution fits all. Is this possible, or is this what everyone wants and it's not currently available?
After doing some research and reading many posts, I thought if I got some experienced replies, I could do more research of my own. Knowing where to look, what to look for and what questions to ask is half the battle.
Input is 720x576 PAL 16:9 (some 4:3). Output would be the same res if possible displayed on SD W/S TV. Playback is through XBMC. Chapters a possibility, but not critical.
Not interested in internet uploads or mobile devices.
