I have a boat load of VHS tapes that I am planning on running thru my S-Video connector on my Mitsubishi SVCR. It's going to go from there into a Canopus ADVC110 device and into the firewire port on my PC. I am working with a demo version of NeatVideo for cleaning video. Does a fantastic job as long as you don't set it to "clean all dirt" or whatever that setting was. Then you loose some detail. Like if someone has hair on their arms, they suddenly look like they shaved all their arm hair off and are clean shaven. I think that's pulling a bit to much off the source.
Couple items.
1. What are current good techniques for cleaning up video from a VHS source? I have money to spend, but know that's not necessary as there are a lot of brilliant plugins you can use with AVISynth to clean up the video.
2. How long should a standard clean job take? Strangly the demo version of NeatVideo for the Sony Vegas 8 product does not have a time limit on it. The website says it will clean only the first 30 minutes. That is true for most of their plugin versions, but does not seem to be that way for Vegas. Because of this, I can get some level of realistic timing to complete. I have a Quad Core Intel processor running overclocked at 3.6 GHz. The NeatVideo Plugin is running and I am saving it to DV format since it's 3 hours and I do not have my two 750GB drives here from NewEgg yet. Limited drive space right now. Once I get those and raid them together I can do these conversions uncompressed. Current figures show with all four CPU's at around 57% usage, that it will take 33 hours to convert in Vegas. Video setting is 720x480x32. Does this seem right with my systems kind of processing power? Your average user would be converting this for a week or more with something slower.
Let me know your thoughts.
