Ok, I'm working on turning a cheap PC I have into a low end HTPC. Specs are:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3600+ (dual core 1.9 ghz)
1GB Ram
GeForce 6150SE (on-board) *This will be upgraded to a Geforce 8xxx soon.
Vista Home Basic
Samsung LN-S3238D LCD TV (connected via VGA)
So far all of my back-ups and other content I've encoded plays fine, even lower bitrate 1080p @ 23.976 AVC (high profile) that I've created myself. The problem is with anime DVD playback. My monitor is a 32 in. LCD with a 60 hertz refresh rate. DVD playback is very jerky on pans, I assume this is because of the refresh rate but I suppose it could just be poor handling of telecine (or both).
My standalone DVD player looks fine through component cables. I suppose my TV has some nice 3:2 removal and comb filters that probably aren't getting used on the VGA input. I've had some issues though with seeing combs from the standalone via HDMI so maybe the TV expects progressive (or at least not 3:2 material) via HDMI.
So what are my options, if any, for getting smooth playback? I know a bit about the encoding side of things but when it comes to how it's displayed I'm clueless. I've come up with a few recommendations but would like some more advise before buying any software/hardware. The following sound like good ideas but I figure people here might know better:
PowerDVD: would it's adaptive deinterlacer or hardware acceleration help?
GeForce 8xxx: I'm getting one anyway, if it helps this problem it'll be sooner than later.
Component Video Out: If the above fail, can I just use the HDTV out to connect to the component video cables and run it to the TV OUT? What, if any, difference is this than my standalone DVD player?
I really would like to eliminate my standalone player without sacrificing quality, can I do this?:thanks:
