View Full Version : What's Good Free Encoder For Poor Originals?

When backing up from original DVDs that are scratched and where the rip will or might be prone to errors because of that, which RB Pro free encoder would work well?
Are there any settings that will mitigate or minimize the ill effects of a scratched original?
Will less compression make it more likely to get a working backup? i.e. Would it help to delete extras?

Scratches shouldn't affect the picture quality... the data is DIGITAL, so unless the drive can't read back the data, the picture should be fine.. The encoder has nothing to do with the scratches on the disc...
What you need is a good ripping drive....

and good ripping software, AnyDVD with DVD Decrypter even though its not updated any more manages better than most
But, saying that I get the odd one that refuses to rip correctly on my DVD-ROM drive, so running it through my DVD burner usually fixes that unless its really badly mangled even after cleaning it then I just try to get another source
The brand of DVD drive can make a difference

Hi,
I use RipIt4Me. I thought that was the best.

It was good, but its not updated anymore and if you quickly scan via Google you'll find a lot of people are looking for it as you can't find a download of it anymore either
I've been using AnyDVD with DVD Decrypter since DVD Decrypter had to be abandoned by 'evil' forces a couple of years ago
So far I've had only one DVD that really confused DVD Decrypter but that was a foreign film with some serious protection methods on it, but I ripped it using AnyDVD Ripper instead
