It's only a suggestion but...

Could compressibility check in GKnot allow to include your own settings for temporal smoother like 1 or 2. Not only tempsmoother(2,1) but 1,2 and 3 and without SpatialSoften.

I think it would be nice to know how good in terms of compressibility is lower resolution vs include a TemporalSmoother(1) or (2) in each movie.

Thanks.
Sergio :)

you can "edit" and "save" the avs, then do the first pass manually (at 6000 kbps for divx4), then "load" the stats/log-file.
if you do it like that every kind of source and filter is possible.

[if you are using SelectRangeEvery (Snip size 13!) you have to "load" NOT "open" the stats-file.]

That's very interesting. I would like to be able to open avi files, run compression checks on them and use GK's values to achieve a good end result.

I'm with you when it comes to the avs file. I have edited it to use a DV file as source, converting to YUV before processing the filters. But what's next? If I open the edited AVS file in VirtualDub, what settings should I do in VirtualDub/DivX Codec configuration? WHen using PAL as source, should I set Maximum key frame interval to 250, max and min quantizer to 12/2, and leave all other settings alone?

Please elaborate.

yes, but set max and min quantizer to 2/2.
this will give you the maximum possible file-size (that's what the comp-check is all about).

Thanks for your time TheWEF.

It's a very useful information.

Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. I followed this method, and got the best result ever using my DV files as source. A couple of questions though. When using D2V as source in the avs file, I usually achieve encoding speed of around 20fps (depending on filters). Changing the avs file to use AviSource or DirectShowSource, encoding speed drops to 2-3 fps.

I also tried to capture from my DV camcorder using the HufYuv codec. Before capturing, I set YUV2 compression method to "Predict Median", and RGB method to "Convert To YUV". No conversion to YUV was needed in the AVS file after I did this. Didn't make a difference to encoding speed though.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.
