Slow encoding when monitor turned off

When doing overnight processing such as downloading I tend to turn my monitor off to save a few a few amps from appearing on the electricity bill. However if I try do this when DivX encoding then the expected completion time jumps from a few hours up to a few days :(. When the monitor is turned on again the encoding time goes to back to normal and finish a few hours later.

Has anyone got any idea why what might be causing this?

FYI I'm using:
DivX4.12 (2 pass) GKnot 0.23

PC Specs:
AMD 800Hz Athlon, 512 Ram, 20GB+60GB HHD
ATI All-in-Wonder,Hansol Monitor

turn off screensaver :)
you prolly have some fatass 3d multitexture, perpixel bumpmapping, etc screensaver.

or maybe your system tries to power down harddisks as well because it thinks you doesn't use your computer. Try turning all screensavers, power saving, etc. options off.

It sounds like the issue with my monitor is particular to my system configeration, I'll try to look into to this a bit more. If anyone else has had a simlar experience then please let me know.

Good tips over screensavers through. I have changed from my 'Matrix code' screensaver to 'blank screen' and this does seem to make a real difference.
