I recently remuxed an avi I had on my computer to mkv, adding chapters to make the video easier to navigate. I tried it out in MPC and it worked perfectly. The same was not so for WMP (11).

My question: Are there any mkv splitters that make chapters work in WMP?

I think that comes down to how much the player is able to integrate from the splitter... Where WMP seems to fail. If you are using Haali's Splitter, then just switch the chapters/streams from the taskbar icon.

I see. I was using gabest's splitter from the DirectShow Filter Pack but I'll give Haali's a go and see how I get on.

mkvmerge and the GUI can both add chapter points based on a text file. If you need to obtain the text file from the DVD first then I suggest you use ChapterXtractor and then use the "OGG" Preset to export the data.

@williamthomasle

Hi!

Your post is confusing - If, as you say, you've used DVD Shrink to compress your original DVD, the compressed DVD retains the same chapters as your original, commercial DVD.

Why do you need to add chapters?

hi guys, thank you for responding back to me. Sorry for the confusion. What i meant was, i have converted an avi file to a video file format and made a back up to a dvd. Once i played it on the computer using media center, i can not press next.. It said chapter 1 and not move to the next chapter. So the whole entire movie is one chapter. However, when i use the dvd shrink and re-author it, i am able to press next on the dvd player, but can not press next if i am playing it on my computer. i don't know if i am clear at this. So my question is, if there is any program that i can use to back up to my dvd, after transferring it from avi to video file and still be able to add chapters, so i don't have to watch the whole entire with one chapter. Please help. I hope this is more clearer.. Thanks for your help.

I'm still bewildered. Perhaps you can clarify things by loading the .AVI into GSpot and posting a screen capture back here?
