Streaming wont work . There's a program called mkv2vob that will make a vob file you can burn to dvd in data format and play well on the PS3. Only thing is it can't FF or RW

You'll have to have a PC emulator but if you do the movies will play nicely.

Use twonky, medialink or mediatomb to stream vobs to the PS3, if they don't work just rename to mpg.

I personally use mediatomb on my mac to stream vob, m2ts, mp4, ts, divx and xvid's to my PS3.

MKV2vob is only for converting mkv to a PS3 playable format.

And yes you can use an external HD to transfer as well.

Quick question. If I burn one of these VOB files to a DL DVD, can I then rip it to the PS3? I've been able to copy the files over my wireless network to the PS3's harddrive (althought it takes quite a while) but it appears that for files larger than 7 gb it isn't possible as the copy operation fails everytime.

If I were to just put the file on a data disc, can i select it and copy it to the drive?

I don't know, I wouldn't waste a DL disc when I can stream across to the PS3. I do know that before the PS3 had streaming capabilities I could transfer across files in excess of 20 GBs using Vilvic media centre.

has anyone tried streaming to the PS3 via VLC? i know you can encode a h264 stream live from a VOB, and it should be able to conform to either the h264 basic or main profiles, so i think it would work. if you need help with getting VLC to stream, just read the documentation on VLC's site.

with a simmilar solution, you can directly stream VOB files using videolan or any other streaming package (even httpd's), no transcoding. (I supose you are using PS3 linux with mplayer or something similar)

How?

That is, if I have vlc installed in a linux box, how do I take a dvd, store it on the linux box, and then use vlc as a mediaserver for a ps3?

I've been looking all over, but I can't find a howto, or directions sufficiently specific enough for my skills, or lack thereof.
