Most of my movies are 1080P MKVs encoded in x264/DTS 5.1. I've been using VisualHub to convert them to MPEG-2 but that strips it down to 2 channels. The only video file that plays with surround sound on my PS3 is a 1080P movie encoded in xvid/AC3.
Is there a way to directly convert my MKVs into xvid/ac3 Avis? I tried "ffmpeg -i movie.mkv -vcodec mpeg4 -vtag XVID -acodec copy test.avi" but the PS3 wasn't able to play the file and it looked beyond horrible in VLC. If not, is there a way to play video files with DTS on the PS3?
I apologize if this has already been posted; I looked but couldn't find a thread on this topic.
EDIT: I should mention that I am on OS X. I would prefer a solution for OS X but I don't mind booting into Windows/Linux to do it.
