View Full Version : Using Nero 8. Have TV cropping, how do I solve this problem?

I'm quite new to DVD burning, and I'm not too knowledgable about how it all works, but I was hoping someone here would be able to explain to me why my TV crops the edges of the video on my homemade DVDs. I'm using Nero 8 Ultra.

I've been trying to burn video files (in avi format, if that helps), and I'm using Nero 8 to do so. I've checked the video options menu, and if gives me the different aspect ratios which I can choose to burn to (4:3, 16:9, and automatic are the options), and it says it burns it to an MPEG2 format. The original dimensions of the videos on my computer are 640x480...and when I import them into making a custom movie with Nero 8 Ultra, it says that the resolution is 4:3, and the dimensions are 704xSomething...

What I'd like to know is whether or not there's anything I can do, either in Nero, or to make some change to the video files themselves, to prevent them from being cropped on my TV screen when I play them in that dvd player. It's so strange...the computer plays them without cropping the edges.

I've heard that adding black borders to the section that gets cropped is a good trick, but I wouldn't know how to do that. Any help anyone can give me is much appreciated (and hopefully, explained in such a way that even a dummy like me can understand)...I apologize in advance for my lack of understanding with regard to the technical terms. Please regard me kindly.

Thank you.

Hi and Welcome.

Ummm. You have an avi. Does it comply with rule 6? http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm

It has to be converted to mpeg to make a DVD. The Nero defaults are screwing up your conversion.

Is a compressed avi?
What's the audio format? AC3?

Let's find out.

Download, unzip and open Gspot (http://gspot.headbands.com/). Then minimize it.

People, sometimes, have trouble with the drag & drop concept. (Obviously not you.)

Go to My Computer...and browse to the folder containing your avi. Left click on the avi. Don't let go. Keep the mouse button down. Drag the file down to where Gspot shows on the task bar. Don't let go of the mouse button. Gspot will blossom (open :) ). You haven't let go of the mouse button? Drag your avi up into Gspot. NOW let go.

At the bottom of Gspot there is 'Proposed Codec Solutions and Tests'. Click on the highlighted buttons. At some point, with luck, 'Render OK' will show to the right.
Post a a snapshot of Gspot. We'll endeavour to give you possible solutions.
