I would edit out the "b-word" from your post. It is a matter of opinion.

Tmpgenc express with dvdauthor is good if you want something easy, if you want something free, i like using mencoder with dvdauthorgui.

An excellent freeware program for just what you wish to do is "DVD Flick"...

I've recently (1 month) been using DVDflick to make excellent, full-featured DVDs that play in standalone players (menus, chapters, etc.).

No quality loss in the transcoding (it's still avi, remember) but it's even easier to use than Nero, and it's free free free from sourceforge.net.

PS: If you have IMGburn installed, DVD flick will use that as the default burner. No fuss, no muss.

And it will be a full (4+ GB) DVD.

ConvertXtoDVD(http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/) fron VSO is a really simple app to use to do this and does a very good job. It's not free but you can use it free of charge for a short period using the trial version.

@fazzaz31

Hi!I've recently (1 month) been using DVDflick to make excellent, full-featured DVDs that play in standalone players (menus, chapters, etc.)Unless a new version of Flick has just come out, to the best of my knowledge, it has never had the ability to generate menus...

Oops, my bad.

I was confusing the drop-down menus (root, chapters, etc.) available in VLC (my player of choice) for the opening menu on a Nero-style produced standalone DVD.

But what the heck, it's free and it works like a charm. Also, it's operation is completely transparent, especially to a newbie. I have the Nero Ultimate 8 upgrade, and after three years with various flavors of Nero on my boxes, I still find the interface to be clumsy and hard to navigate. DVD Flick is not candy apple pretty, but it works as advertised.

And did I mention that it's free?

@rastabo

Which program did you ultimately use?

I started out with the free DVD Flick, it worked well on the first application, then later on I started having trouble with it so I decided to buy the VSO software and It has been okay since. Once again thanks for the right suggestions.

Can anyone out there please explain to me what I need to do or what I am doing wrong? When I download movies in avi format that says it's about 700MB and when I proceed to convert them with convertXtodvd it turns out it is only 1 minute or 2 mins most of the time. Sometimes it will say one of the files can't be converted. My downloads are from UTorrent and mp3Rocket. Please help

That's a blatant rule 6 violation. Thread closed.
