View Full Version : Ancient software DVD players=New rippers?

After responding to a question by "Musi", regarding DVD software playback of original DVDs containing the type of copy protection found on "New Line" (and now, apparently, Universal as well) DVDs, a possibly interesting, almost obvious, thought occurred to me:

Per "Musi", current software DVD players are incapable of playing these dastardly DVDs, presumably due to their file structure.

I've found that two "ancient" (each 5-10 years old, or so) freeware software players have no such difficulty playing these original, pressed DVDs - Microsoft's "DVDPLAY.EXE" (originally included on the Win95 installation discs) and "DSPlayer", by Martin Offenwanger.

Since these players are not hindered by the most current copy protection, including bastardization of the directory/file structure, could they not be used by those knowledgeable in creating ripping programs as the basis for a truly "unlimited capability" DVD ripping program?

Isn't this exactly what the "PathPlayer" feature in DVDFab is supposed to do? If you read the website/tutorial/pathplayer, it seems to describe this functionality.

I am a registered owner of DVDFab Platinum and am pleased with the progress so far. However, it is a mystery to me (and to you) why this technology should not be able to work out of the box - why should "progress" be necessary? It may be mysterious only because I do not know enough about it - you know what they say - a little knowledge can be dangerous. I am sure I have too little knowledge.

Hi!Isn't this exactly what the "PathPlayer" feature in DVDFab is supposed to do?The operative phrase in your post is "supposed to do".

Read the other thread I started regarding just that topic ("PathPlayer" and "AI Scanner" at:

Acknowledged! I will post any of these type results of interest to that thread.

I think that the X-protect disks hold the most promise in making RI4M choke. I am surprised that this thread is not deluged with people trying "this vs. that" comparisons.

@HAMsmokeI think that the X-protect disks hold the most promise in making RI4M choke.You seem to be a bit behind the times ;>}

There is no need for speculation on your part that you "think" X-Protect DVDs can't be properly processed by RipIt4Me - It is common knowledge that RipIt4Me CANNOT properly process DVDs containing that concept of copy protection...

"This vs. that" comparisons of existing ripping programs have nothing to do with the purpose of this thread - which is:

Since these players are not hindered by the most current copy protection, including bastardization of the directory/file structure, could they not be used by those knowledgeable in creating ripping programs as the basis for a truly "unlimited capability" DVD ripping program?

Ah yes - in addition, I misread the premise of the other thread where you ask about the standard functionality of the programs vs. the special capabilities when adding Pathplayer or AI Scanner.

As far as being "behind the times", well OK, but only because I am rather new to the game. You will find me a quick learn.

@HAMSmokeAs far as being "behind the times", well OK, but only because I am rather new to the game.Then a small friendly suggestion, if I may - Use the "Search" function (available at the top of any forum page) to research a topi, in advance of posting about it...

Don't you need to actually act friendly before making friendly suggestions ?
