View Full Version : alternative to new-user delay

Making new users wait 5 days after registering to post might cut down on the spam and 'help me, I'm clueless' posts, it also annoys the heck out of advanced users who have been lurking and browsing for answers to their questions and now found one that hasn't been answered by somebody else.
The problem with the current system is that it assumes that people are going to register just to lurk. In reality, most people only register when they want to contribute something, or when that's the only way to view the site's content (which is only causes headaches for admins and users).
As an alternative, use cookies to track how long (in days) a user's been browsing the site, and how many pages they've viewed. Then when a user registers, the system reads that cookie and if the user's been browsing more than x days and had more than x pageviews, they can post right away, or at least with a much shorter delay.
you'd need two cookies (both of which would expire after only a few weeks), one for first visit, and one for number of pageviews. Then, for each page request from a non-member, read pageviews cookie and write back the incremented value.

Just checked, I didn't post for a month after registering and I'd been reading for some time before that.

I lurked for years before I registered
only when I had troubles with some anime content did I register and start posting
dear god please don't look at those posts
<.<
so I don't see a problem with it
you'd be surprised at how many one post wonders still end up around here even with the 5 day rule...

And what's wrong with having a low post count? Some people (most of them, i'd hope) don't post unless they actually have something to say, or some useful info to share (or are seeking somebody with useful info to share).

Simpler alternative: Email (or pm if you can?) an admin asking them to authorize your account early. If it's lucid enough, I'm sure they'll oblige.

Oh, that's what you meant by 'one post wonder'. I usually just call those people what they are: morons/idiots/etc..
And the only real way to avoid them is to treat 'em like vandals: ignore their words and delete their post and/or account.

Another option would be to have all posts from new users require approval from a moderator.

It's a good rule to avoid spammers and such people.
I must admit I was alittle pissed over the rule when I finally registered after lurking for like a year and found that I must wait additionally 5days before posting.
But oh well, if I had waited a year before posting I'm sure I could wait another 5days :p
