View Full Version : What are Good Supported DVD-/+R Media?

Well, for the first time in a very long time, I've run into a situation where the DVD player (my girlfriends, it's a JVC player) won't play a movie burned onto a DVD-/+R disc. It happened twice.

The first was with Memorex DVD+R media, which I found out makes perfect sense, since the player doesn't support/play DVD+R media.

The second was with Maxell DVD-R media, which doesn't make sense since the player does support/play DVD-R media. So I'm guessing it just has issues with Maxell discs.

In order to hopefully decrease the likely hood of this happening again, I was hoping someone might have some answers to my questions.
My questions are:
(1) Which is the better, more supported DVD media out there? DVD-R or DVD+R?
(2) What is/are good, most supported Brand(s) of DVD media out there?

My brand options are the following which are available at the local best buy: Verbatim (The Verbatim packs are labeled as "Made in Taiwan", and I heard the packs labeled as "Made in Japan" are the better re-branded discs. Is this true?), Sony, Memorex, Maxell, Dynex, TDK

neuron2: My apologies for breaking rule 12. I assure you I had no bad intentions. Just looking for some recommendations and opinions. :)

The +R technology is better, especially for double layer media. But single layer -Rs are good as well.
Verbatim is a very good brand. I use mainly the ones made in Taiwan or Singapore, without problem. The packs made in India might be less good, but that's not sure.
Other brands, notably Memorex and Maxell might be as good as Verbatim, but the quality is not so constant, and it is difficult to know what you are buying.

And, almost universally recognised, the best (or at least equal best) media is Taiyo Yuden.

Hi!

I'd suggest that if your girlfriend's player is THAT OLD, that it only recognizes DVD-R (Virtually all players manufactured in the last two years recognize DVD+r and DVD-R and D/L versions of one or both +r and -R), buy a new player.

One can be had for $30US or less...

Thank you all for your posts. It's proving very helpful.

@blutach - Aren't Verbatims (or at least the made in Japan ones), re-branded Taiyo Yuden discs?

@setarip_old - True. It would make sense to buy a new player, but my girlfriend is a stubborn one. And it doesn't just support DVD-R, it supports all the medias EXCEPT DVD+R. Check it out:

What's everyone's take on the quality of Sony DVD-R media?

Strange that it supports +RW but not +R!

Sony doesn't make media. Therefore, what you find in the box is unpredictable. Take care!

@MaTriX 2.0it doesn't just support DVD-R, it supports all the medias EXCEPT DVD+R.No - It also doesn't directly support D/L DVD+R, D/L DVD-R, DVD RAM...

Ahh yes, your right. I wasn't paying attention to whether or not it played dual layer discs.

No. They are 2 different companies. But both make excellent media.

TY quality used to be excellent but has been discussed somewhat controversially as of late, e.g. here:
