how to: disable folder thumbails?

so I've got a partition thats dedicated to images that I find all across the net, now sometimes navigating it my poor laptop locks up from it generating the thumb nails, but thats kinda how I sort them all...

is there way to disable thumbnail generation on *just* folders?
I've manually set a few thumbnails on some of the larger folder but it doesn't seem to be helping much

yahoo, microsoft.com and tomshardware don't seem to wanna help me much either

these are just for images, I've already disabled the video thumbnails long ago

Your post isn't clear.

Do you want to disable thumbnails on a folder-by-folder basis?

Which OS? XP and Vista handle thumbnails differently.

basic drive layout
swap (f:\)
folder1 <- 500 images
folder2 <- 200 images
folder3 <- 30 images
ect...

I want to keep the images in the drive thumb nailed
but XP likes to put thumbnails on the folder icon, which means its thrashing the disk like crazy to generate them

I don't want them to do that, I want them to be the normal folder icon without thumbnails inside of them

enable "view all content" ... or how it is called in english :)

than you see a file called desktop.ini (this ini is in EVERY picture folder)... delete that file and let xp build new thumbs for you... and as a plus the picture u set up for ur top-folder is now the picture u wanted to adress to the folder and not some old xp thumbs :)

is enabled
as well as 'hide protected system files' is disabled
no desktop.ini file
in fact I haven't seen on my my xp installation in a long time either

theres just thumbs.db files everywhere

most of them are around 1meg
the one in the root of the partition is 14 megs...
scary...

you can actually change the folder types all at once
which I did
it helped but not a lot, oh well

Do you understand that when you select custom thumbnail via the method described [Choose picture], it will not trash the drive anymore when attempting to generate the folder thumbnail? But your individual image thumbnails will still be available. Thumbs.db is a cache for miniatures and you can disable its generation, you'll regain the space but the thumbnails will again be trashing the drive:

You might want to try TweakUI and decrease the thumbnail quality and/or their size (pixel dimensions).

i think you can make that in windows in the folder of administrative tools. actually theres a command that i use before for disabling some of my folder but worst i forgot already... i will ask my friend then i will post here... he..

Well, I have just tried xplorer2 lite:

At first it seemed to be trashing the drive, but the folder that contained 3,000 image files shown as thumbnails loaded really quick. If you give it a try, go to Tools - Options and read this:

The only way to override explorer's folder thumbnails is to replace it, you can't simply remove it, apparently. There's something called ArCon Folder Thumbview (ACSHLEXT.DLL) that seems to give people a lot of grief by completely breaking folder thumbnails, maybe that will work for you.

Sadly, you can't just add the pertinent key to the shellex keys of Folder and Directory with the name {BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1} and whatever you want inside, it has to actually handle folder thumbnailing (not even regular file thumbnailers work).

so easy to make, yet you slap yourself as soon as you see them(years later)

what I find odd is that only some folders even get thumbnailed while others don't...
even though I treat them all exactly the same
