What is the difference between the two filters and in which situations is each one better?

fast deinterlace simply reduces the vertical resolution by half which already gets rid of the interlacing pretty well. smart deinterlace is a true deinterlace algorithm. Which one is better only you can decide... your choice may be different depending on the source. For instance.. I did some TV eps that looked better with fast deinterlace than smart deinterlace.. but for actual movies I would tend to use the smart deinterlacer rather than fast deinterlace.

furthermore.. if it's ntsc I'd try the ivtc plug and greedyhma rather than to deinterlace, and for pal you can try to change the field order in dvd2avi.. most pal dvds are just flagged interlaced but in fact they're progressive.

hi,
i was wondering where can we find the GreedyHMA, ive already heard that it has a good IVTC method...
and your reffering to the Nandub's original filter when you said "ivtc plug"?

thanks

ivtc plug = ivtc plugin for avisynth.. it's part of the gknot package and will be used if you activate ivtc in the save avs screen.
as for greedyhma.. it's on my software page (the full listing)... there's a sample line for it's use commented out in the avisynth scrip that gknot creates but you'll have to manually enable it. for more info about greedyhma check the avisynth forum

actually greedy is in the pack as well [though not supported in the gui, yet] and if you did install the full pack you find it in your gknot folder (and the readme that tells you how to use it in the docs-subfolder).

so if i have a PAL source and dvd2avi tells me, it is interlaced, i can deinterlace it in dvd2avi or i have to use the deinterlacer in gknot?

what is the best way?

interlace filter takes much time for encoding, so how do i make this in dvd2avi?

dvd2avi can't deinterlace.. however, if you read the guide properly there's a passage in the dvd2avi part, a little trick that may just help... and if dvd2avi shows interlaced that doesn't necessarily mean it's truly interlaced, it just means that the interlaced flag has been set. So, how to find out? preview (f5) ;)

thx for your fast answere

yes i know, the preview says me, it is interlaced

so, then try to swap field order?

and when dvd2avi after that in preview again says, it's interlaced, i have to use a filter?

I think what doom9 tried to say was that you have to really watch the movie in order to determine if it is interlaced or not. When watching the DVD2AVI preview window, the right hand side data window says "interlaced". However, the movie may not be interlaced!! You have to go to a scene with fast horisontal motion and watch the fast moving objects and see if there are small black stripes/lines behind the moving objects. If there are, the movie is interlaced. There are great articles at Nicky Pages homesite, explaining this(see DivX Digest).

thx

i think i got it ;)

i got the trick when i tried to swap field order, that it was heaviely interlaced :D
