The new K Deskto Environment has been just released. It is completely new and offers a lot of new and exciting stuff.

in addition to being completely new, it it also completely not finished yet and they made a mistake releasing it as production ready. It was the same thing when they released KDE3. It wasn't ready. Expect KDE4 to be ready/fixed when it reaches version 4.1

basically its the foundation distros and tinkerers should start playing with till a 'proper' release is made. i guess it was either that or releasing 30 release candidates :p

I already (very quickly) tried the new Kubuntu LiveCD based on it; first impression is, very slick and functional interface, they have actually revolutioned the way things work ... gaining in usability, in the process.
That said, I already found a quick or two, too :P

it still needs some work(plugins etc) its rough around the edges why they didn't just make it a RC i don't know but its like maybe two to three months away from being Desktop Environment Stable and Ready.

KDE4 is just the base. Usability will come with 4.1.

the thing is .. they generated a lot of hype
i dont really mind hype, but i dislike hype when something is touted as revolutionary, but then when the first release is really out, everyone says that this is just the base for "what will be in the future"
its fine once its polished, but they could have decreased the noise beforehand with it ....

the thing is .. they generated a lot of hypeThe users did, not the KDE devs.
i dont really mind hype, but i dislike hype when something is touted as revolutionary, but then when the first release is really out, everyone says that this is just the base for "what will be in the future"They were saying what exactly 4.0.0 is weeks before the release, not after. And most blogs and tech sites picked up on that. That the users didn't, well, it's not KDE's fault if users don't read the presented information.
Oh and if you haven't yet, watch this video: Keynote at the KDE 4.0 Release Event (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6642148224800885420&hl=en).
