View Full Version : AAC "lossless" compression ???

For archival purposes I am looking for lossless or near-lossless compression using AAC.
I currently use NeroAACenc in bitrate mode, but am wondering if using -q 1.0 could roughly be compared to the -qp 0 option in x264.
Ideally I'd produce a stream with x264 lossless and AAC "lossless", to be kept for later use / editing / recompression.
insights, anyone ?
cheers

Even without considering technical details, FLAC is about 50% bigger than q 1. So it's clearly not lossless, but quality is undoubtedly pretty high.

Is not same in theory, because -qp 0 is lossless, and -q 1.0 is always lossy, but there isn't any chance with some kind of super audio hi fi expensive system, to hear difference bettwen LC-AAC -q1.0 and original audio, that why i am saying in theory, because LC-AAC on max bitrate can be called lossless, if good encoder is like is Nero.
If you want "safe" audio quailty better keep original format.
AAC lossless is now big question. There is no user-frendly decoders/encoders.

Thank you both for your feedback.
I've heard about, but never used FLAC.
Indeed I'm not running after real lossless, I can tolerate bad audio more than bad video.

Not sure I understand you : Nero does provide a decoder. Or do you mean hardware players ? Have yet to find an aac (m4a) player other than the ipod.
thanks

Not sure I understand you : Nero does provide a decoder.Well that decoder can't decode AAC Lossless, or any AAC (like is FAAD) decoders at moment. There is no any decoder which can help you.

I was under the impression that AAC was a lossy codec, end of. Though I highly recommend FLAC. :)

I like FLAC as well
nice and lightweight
as for AAC
I find I get transparancy at about 128-250kbps from any stereo source I have and my shitty equipment
about the same for mp3s as well really
